In the inheritance section, Zoom Genetics explains the various terms used in the study of genetics, variation and inheritance. The various laws of Mendelian Inheritance are explained. The types and causes of variations are extensively dealt with. The various inter-genic and intra-genic interactions of genes are also explained and illustrated with graphics.

In the genes section, the various experiments conducted to proves that DNA is the genetic material are explained.


Very detailed explanation with graphics of DNA, their structure, types, functions, their role as genetic material, their importance in protein synthesis is taught.

Semi-conservative replication of DNA and its processes are explained.

How DNA is packaged in a chromosome is explained with figures and graphics.

Similarly, RNA - Ribose Nucleic Acid, their structure, types and importance in protein synthesis is explained. How they are transcribed from DNA is also explained.

Also the genes, their types and structure is explained. Similarly Gene Expression and Regulation is explained in detailed and illustrated way. The inducible and Repressible operon models are also explained.

The various aspects of protein synthesis from transcription to translation are explained. How does the three letter codon affects the protein synthesis is also taught. The Amino acids are also explained.

In chromosomes section, the topics discussed are Chromosomes, types and structure; genetic disorders; linkage and crossing over; sex-determination methods; genetic variations and mutations.

The chromosomal theory of inheritance are discussed. There are various types of chromosomes; autosomes and sex-chromosomes. chromosomal staining methods are explained. the chromosome has various structures like centromere, telomeres, satellite, arms and chromomere.

There is a huge list of genetic disorders. Some are due to autosomal changes, while others are linked to sex-chromosomes like Cat cry syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome, down's syndrome, turner's syndrome.

Other disorders are due to single gene disorders like Tay-sach syndrome, Thalassemia, Sickle cell anaemia, or Huntington's disease, Marfan's syndrome, cystic fibrosis, color blindness, muscular dystrophy.


Still other disorders are due to incompatibility of genes, like A. B. O incompatibility, or Rhesus R. H. Factor in blood groups.

The phenomenon on linkage and linkage groups, their kinds, crossing over, and various types of sex-related characters are discussed. There are some characters which are sex-linked, others are sex-influenced while still others are sex-limited characters.

There are various sex-determination methods like X-Y Method or Z-W method. The methods by which the sex of a baby is determined in humans is dealt with in detail. Also the sex determination in honey bee's to create worker bee or queen bee or male drone is explained by illustrated graphics.

The various methods and reasons by which genetic mutation occurs are explained. Some are structural or point mutations of genetic code. Others are caused by physical or chemical mutagens like ultra-violet rays, or carcinogenic chemical agents. Some mutations are good for the survival of a species, while others may be disastrous.

In the Genetic engineering section, various techniques utilized for genetic engineering are discussed. Also ethical, legal, and social implications and issues are highlighted. Transgenic animals and their use in bio-technology are discussed. Various techniques of gene therapy are explained. DNA finger-printing and its use in various fields are explained. Human genome project is a mega project to map human genetic setup so as to have deeper understanding of our genetic makeup.

The bio-technology section discusses topics like recombinant DNA technology, DNA library, restriction endonucleases, polymerase chain reaction (P. C. R.) and bio-technology applied to various fields like agriculture, food and dairy, medicines, etc.

There are hundreds and hundreds of multiple choice questions so that a student can practice and understand deeper the topics of genetics.
