How to Study Well & In Short Time
Who said excelling at high school or university means being nerds? Yeah, this category of people exists and there will be always guys who study all days without hanging out with friends. There are also many students who get good marks just because they are smart. Finally there are those who do not find any difficulty also because they know how to study well and optimize their efforts by applying a strategy. Everyone can optimize their learning process in order to excel at school without becoming nerds. In this article I will explain some strategies everyone could apply in order to study well and in less time. These tricks will be as useful in school as good also to be applied in everyday life.
Scheduling Your Time
Have you ever prepared an exam the night before?
This is maybe one of the most important things you should consider. Opening a book every day and passing 5 hours is not really the good solution for you. Also studying once a month is not good: for most of our activities we have schedules. We go to the gym at a certain hour, we have breakfast, we eat, we take shower... everything is planned in our life, so why not scheduling also a studying activity?
A hour a day is very little time and does not influence our social life, however when it is scheduled it becomes more productive. If you study without planning it, you just end up opening your book while checking Facebook notifications, and then you are going to stay many hours in front of the book, without having learned so much. It is like going to the gym while doing other things. A hour of full workout will make you fitter than 3 hours of "playing with the unloaded barbell while taking photos at the mirror every minute". After some time of planned learning activity, you do not have to open books for the rest of the day. In addition you are going to take exams without doing big "studying parties" in the night with tanks of coffee on your desk.
At the end, you are going to arrive ready for your exam, without even realizing it! Studying will become less stressful in your life, after you have learned how to study well by scheduling your time.
Brainstorming is a useful technique often considered by companies in order to find new ideas for products or advertising solutions. You can still apply the same strategy at school in order to improve your results. In companies, brainstorming consists in allowing people at a meeting to express freely their ideas without censoring them, giving them "free flow" speaking. Only after this session, it may come up a good idea, and this is why brainstorming is considered useful by companies.
In a school environment the same technique can be applied between the student and someone who is helping him to pass different exams. The student can learn multiple subjects in just a single learning session. The tutor asks a question about a subject and then, after the student has answered it, a new question will be asked, but about another subject, which is completely different from the other one. Our mind is heavily trained, as it is going to elaborate many different information in just a second, and this will lead you to a better learning.
Have you found these strategies useful? If you know how to study well also by applying other strategies, feel free to write about your learning experiences in the comments!
Take Care Of Yourself
Sometimes the solution for a better studying is more simple than you imagined: in fact when you take care of yourself you improve your performance in every aspect of your life: you have more energy, you are more efficient and ready to face all challenges of your life... even that hard exam you will take the next week! In particular, these are the tips you can follow in order to improve your performances on a long term:
- Sleeping at least 7 hours a night. The number is just an example: some people need more, other ones less hours of sleep. The important thing is to sleep enough in order for your body to get rested. In addition, also waking up in a good way is important: put your alarm far from the bed, so that you are not tempted to snooze it in order to lay in bed for another 5 minutes after it rings (a very stressful activity for your body, even if the temptation to do it is very great if you have your alarm near you). In addition, adding an alarm which gradually lights up your room before ringing would be a great idea, as your body experiences a situation similar to seeing sunrise: waking up will be gradual and natural, so that you will get up much more rested than in the past nights!
- Eating in a good way, by choosing healthy food will help you in every part of your life: in fact a good nutrition will lead you to more energy, and sometimes also to an improvement of your mood.
- Doing some fitness every day, like running or going to the gym is also another great thing you should consider: sport helps you to relieve stress... and also you have opportunity to improve your body... finally remember the famous proverb: mens sana in corpore sano.
Don't Become Demoralized: Studying is not Everything in Life!
Do not forget to ask for help if you have problems in passing a certain exam: your family, some friends, tutors at university: it is not something strange, there are people ready to help you if you need it. Sometimes studying with another person is much more profitable and nice than laying alone in front of the books for hours!
Failing an exam is normal: not everything goes well at the first time! However some students become demoralized after a fail. If this happens, remember studying is not everything in your life, but just a part of it: failing an exam does not mean failing as a person or being unable to continue your studies: you should only try another time, without getting demoralized, as there is no reason for it! Instead, this leads you to fail other times, as you are slowly giving up, because you think to be unable to attend your school or university. If you start acknowledging a fail is not shameful, but only a normal thing that could happen, you will be more motivated to continue to study.
Do you prefer studying alone or with other people?
