Without hesitation I suggest volunteering in a high school or middle school. Volunteer for any opportunity to be around the students and ask the admin who is known for their abilities and ask if you can observe that classroom.
Do you have a "Teacher of the Year" in your area? If so, ask that district, admin and that teacher if you can observe, no matter what grade level they teach.
Put yourself in the middle of schools and classrooms and libraries and just absorb the interactions and what the kids respond to.
Knowing how to relate to and get kids to respond to you is nine tenths of the battle when it comes to teaching.
AND, if you're an adventurous type, consider international teaching. It was just what I needed, and love about my life -- teaching in six countries and getting WAY ahead of the financial game when I came 'home' 18 years later.
Good luck! And, write to me directly if you need/want more information about international teaching.
