In the past, status differences were set in stone. But with greater equality and democracy comes a desire to spread the status around and invent new forms of status. However the more status there is in society, the more disadvantaged those without it feel. This leads to a levelling up where status is awarded as an encouragement to those receiving less recognition. Should we reward only those who have done well or also those who have not to encourage them to do better?
