   Is the public education system in the US really broken?
   
   Given that we're going broke, I suppose its going to get tougher to maintain standards.

   I think it has been broke, i learned more from the ages of 17-21 than i ever learned in school, college is also another half waste of time, you have to learn things that have entirely nothing to do with your career choice, high school teaches you how to be a grown adult but nothing ABOUT what is going on in the world, and the truth about the past they tell us is all twisted

   Yes! Yes! Yes! I think its broken! I don't want to get started...the list of bad words/comment is going to be longer than what is on Santa Claus list!  This world is F up just like our justice system! I'm sorry I just really have to say that. Some may not agree with what I'm saying, but if your living in CA, you'll understand exactly what i'm saying and why student test score is in the drain somewhere below the core of the earth!

   Yes very much so. The system is over funded, under regulated and answers to nobody.  The children are at the bottom of a long list and the political interference, local, state and national has buried any chance of recovery. We need to start over...shame on us...we are dealing with our children's future here.

   I work in the education system, and I am shocked by how much educations has declined since I was a child.  We no longer teach cursive writing, penmanship, sentence diagramming or how to write a lengthy paper.  Far too many kids at the high school level are using drugs.  Far too many parents do not want their children doing homework,  do not enforce bedtimes, and do not encourage hard work at school.  It's not just a school problem ... it's a systemic problem with our whole society!

   Yes it is, and being that my daughter is starting Kindergarten this year...it's very scary. My solution since I can't change the world by myself?  I plan on teaching her more at home after school on things that she's not learning at school.   Of course, I'll make it fun learning with games and such, but I honestly feel like if I don't do this, she won't learn as much as she should know growing up.

   This is such a paradox. People in the US pay atleast 25% of their income in taxes. If this money is not being spent on citizens, then where is it all going?

   Unfortunately, yes, but I believe a lot of it starts at home. So many parents are unwilling to discipline their children, use TV as a babysitter and don't even raise their kids, then they send them off to school and overworked teachers have to deal with these problems. And the teachers can't discipline the kids either!

   I would not say it is broke but it does need some changes.  The process of our education system does need to be revised.  Too many times teachers are given the blame for poor test grades when in fact there are seveal variables involved not just teachers.
   
   Teachers need the resources to have the capability to get the content of their subjects across to their students.  They also should not be assigned subjects for which they have not had the training or instruction to teach.  Sometimes teachers get assigned topics to teach for which they do not have a background to do a quality job.  In these instances they are learning along with their students which is not a good situation.
   
   Another aspect is the evaluation criteria used to measure schools.  Schools sometimes utilize their resources to actually teach the test so they have great scores and their schools get rated higher.  Another factor impacting evaluation criteria for which the results may not always consider is the capability of students to comprehend the subjects being taught.  Every student does not learn at the same speed and there are sometimes differences in where the schools are located that can impact the capability of students to score higher on tests.
   
   In all the process in place is not broken but the structure and some of the critiera needs to be examined so proper evaluations are made on the things that are measured.

    I'd say it needs much revision, and cutting funding for education is going to get us nowhere. We are placing too much importance on passing tests and not allowng students to reach their true potential in their individual intelligence level. Unfortunately, teachers do not have the time or resources to help their students to think outside the box, which then does not help them understand true math/science concepts or how to use language in various ways other than what they see in black and white on the tests... Trust me, we'd love to let students explore and learn so many wonderful things, but we are so limited. We really need to rethink what is important in education and help our students reach their true potential so they can become adults who can successfully contribute in this ever advancing world.
