I've invented a data compression technique that could be slightly useful for large tables of numerical data, and for telemetry from satellites and space probes. However there was nothing to compare it with. So I also had to create a pedestrian 'Brand X' technique.
I got 'Brand X' published in the top journal in my field, Anal. Chem. But I had to go to a little-known journal to get the real McCoy published.
Problem is: Mathematics is not patentable.
