Backround checks for Board Of Education members?
Do you think school board members should be fingerprinted when they're volunteers and not even there when students are?
In Florida, school boards are elected and paid. Background checks seem to be essential in today's sorry society. Even Sunday school teachers get background checks around here. Personally, I don't like the idea . . . it is getting us used to personal files and intrusion. In my lifetime, I have seen fiercely independent people become willing to give up more and more privacy and freedom for the sake of safety. Gone are the days where no background checks were necessary.
Being in a profession where I am required to have annual background checks, I don't have an issue with it, because I have nothing to hide. Maybe if I had something embarrassing on there, I would think differently. I also think the safety of children trumps our desire for privacy.
I have received background check results from people applying to be foster or adoptive parents that had disqualifying offenses on them, including violent crimes. Even knowing that they had committed violent crimes, they tried to work with children. People make choices, and choices have consequences. I wouldn't want a person convicted of a violent crime or abuse of a child to hold any position that has anything to do with kids. To me, there couldn't be a bigger red flag.
I agree, in this day and age, any contact with children, even in a volunteer position, should involve a background check.
Society as a whole is being violated in many ways and this is one of them, however with so many adults assaulting youth you can't be tooo careful. We are making the innocent suffer because of a few bad apples. In a minuted they will want to come into your home and check how you live, what you eat, and who you talk too.
The U.S. spends more time on its citizens and do not focus enough on the people they should be following.
Yes I do think they should have background checks and be fingerprinted. We just had a case (close to where I work) in which a school board member, at least 1 teacher, and a coach were all involved in drug distribution to the kids in their own damn school. I mean...seriously? Ridiculous. Now, I have no idea if any of them had anything in their records that would have red flagged this behavior, but at a minimum they needed to be in the system.
yes unfortunately you have to do it.. it is sad. but you do. so many jobs you have to have a background job anyway.

A lot of people are saying that the congressmen (and women?) who voted against background checks are cowards, cowing down to NRA pressure. I don't believe they are cowards. I think you have to have a basic core of humanity first and some sense of of moral/ethical compass.

I think we should. If it's one job that a mandatory background check should be required for, it's that of a public official. Why? Representation of the citizens is a sacred trust and that trust has been violated over and over again, and speaking for myself, I am damned tired of...
