It was supposedly the end of some lunar cycle. Also, they might have just realized it was a waste of time to make a calendar go more than a few years in advance.

I have no idea, and I doubt that many of the people who make a big deal out of this whole 2012, end of the world thing know much either about the Mayan calendar or its culture in general.
