Contrary to popular belief Dr Joseph Ignace- Guillotin after whom this method of decapitation is named is not responsible for the invention. He set some guidelines for a more ' humane' capital punishment for miscreants To his king Louis XVI and the assembly. Prior to this the methods were burning at the stake or a crushing wheel( !) on his proposal a committee was formed to design a less messy form of killing.
The committee consisted of Dr Antonine Louis, Dr Guillotin himself and few others who were involved in the unique beveled blade design with a French army officer called Laquiante and a German Engineer Tobias Schmidt .
Because of the 'swift' death without prolonged suffering it was felt more acceptable!
