What is the purpose of education?

    (1) to fit a child or an adult .. .. to fulfil some function in society?

    (2) to develop the full potential of the human being?- including those areas of the brain cells that are still dormant, unawakened?

The purpose of education in my opinion is to provide knowledge so that one can earn a decent living in a specified field and to become a productive member of a specified social setting abeit as a member of a small group or the whole of society.

The primary purpose of education is to ensure the legacy, and hopefully advancement, of our communal knowledge to the following generations.  From this emanates all other collateral purposes for education, be they social, economic or cultural.

Formal education helps us in acquiring knowledge known to mankind. With this, we can choose to explore new areas unknown to us. Or we can choose to use this to function as part of the society.

Education if for your own self. It helps to have the knowledge that school brings. Education can come for every where, not just from school. I'm now 32 and I'm still learning things on a daily basis. In the end what I learned is what help me to be me.

To learn. It's called an education to educate people.
    1. To fit both children and adults. Children are in grade school. Adults have college and universities. This is to help THEM get higher paid and more respect.
    2. To understand if it was important to our full potential, we would have to define what our potential is for. That is too much stress so lets stay away from that point. Also, if there are area's of our brain that are dormant, learning won't awaken them. Something else will. But what is that something else?

Some people say the purpose is to get a job. That helps and it is a very practical outcome of education. I think, however, that education is all about bigger thoughts than you would come up with on your own. It is about expanding your world.
