According to a blog posted on the web site blogspot.com; there was a 1.5 class X flare on March 9th, just before the Japan quake and tsunami. Also, there was a smaller class M flare before the Hatti quake. However, there have been many quakes without any solar flare activity.
There are some theories that the moon's ellipitical orbit, when it reaches perigee, is a trigger for quakes. A lot more scientific research is needed in this field.
