What do you think about what has been done to the Native American people?

I am of Sioux heritage with some Blackfoot and Irish,  thrown in. I didn't grow up on a reservation but visit them often now and work with the poor on the reservations often. I wish more Americans were aware of how very bad the Native American people were treated and how many live today in some of the worst and poorest conditions on earth. Do you know how many treaties the white man made with the Native Americans that the white man lived up to? Not a single one. But for the most part the Native American people are a forgotten people.

The Native Americans are not a forgotten people!  Perhaps you should explore those places and people that have always respected them, their history and their spirit.  From the other side of the world  where I come from, your people have always been revered and their collective plight has been known for well over a century.  The loss of powerful and credible leaders has certainly taken its toll, but then Why do your people not replace that strength with new leaders who are able to achieve with legislation etc what the ancients achieved with the horse, their great courage and spiritual skills?

Pearldiver is right, the Native Americans are not a forgotten people, the first book I have read in my native Eastern European country was about the Native Americans, their courage, their wisdom...my first heroes I dreamt about as a child and helped me to find my voice for thing I believe in...There are many native nations, that are in the same situation all around the world...Aboriginals are the ones who try to survive and reclaim their heritage in my adoptive country I live now...

You can forgive but you can not forget, and you should never will...the Native Americans are too great to be forgotten, be always proud who you are by keeping their memory alive:)

I am from India and I first came to know about Native Americans from books which I picked up from the American Library in Mumbai.

I agree that all is not well with the Native Americans but at the same time I feel the American Nation and the American conscience will some day look at them and do something for them. We have to forget and forgive the events of history. There were wounds inflicted by both the sides on both the sides. I have read writings on the internet describing the events of 500 years as 'The American Holocaust'; But I personally refuse to agree that it was a holocaust. What happened was a confrontation of two civilizations which were centuries apart from each other; what happened was inevitable.

I hope and pray that The Native  Americans try their best to come into the mainstream of American Society.

I read where my people said, had they not eat their shoes, they would have died. Do you know any other people that has been treated so badly?  I don't think any others have ever been treated as bad.

We are not a forgotten people.  We may not be noticed here in the USA but as I have traveled to other places I have been pleased to find out that not only do they know about us but take time to learn the truth about our people.

We are not a forgotten people because we remember our stories and the teachings of our grandfathers and grandmothers.  As long as one of us carries those stories we will not be forgotten.

We will not allow the ones around us to forget who and what we are.
