The economies of the Mayan city states and their societies slowly collapsed due to the financial toll of incessant warfare. The maintaining of large armies drained the treasuries, trade decreased, food production slowed, the gap between rich and poor increased, and buildings could not be repaired. Soon, the people started leaving the degenerate cities and went to live in the jungles in small communities--sort of like living "off the grid" today. The buildings remained in disrepair and the governments collapsed. The jungle reclaimed most the great cities. But the Mayans still live in the Yucatan region today.
