Genuine laughter is the best medicine. Sometimes, in a conversation with my BFF, regaling life's difficulties, she or I will make an "off the cuff" comment that leaves us both in uncontrollable laughter. All the angst dissolves. Laughter is cathartic, leaving stress in the dust.
I have an autoimmune disease that has a negative effect on my white blood cell count, making me susceptible to illness. I have noticed a correlation with heightened periods of stress and flares in my disease. I live alone (with my furry, Scottish Terrier canine companion) and I watch TV for relaxation in the evening. Whether I shed tears over Grey's Anatomy or laughter watching Seinfeld reruns, I feel palpable stress relief and am then ready for the respite healing power of sleep.
