I think it makes for a person who eventually puts on a hard confident exterior, but inside is deeply insecure of themselves.

I was an "unfavored" child and as an adult I can attest to the truth of that. I have done years of therapy but nothing can replace the emotional support of loving parents.
This type of family dynamic can be very damaging and creates a lot of anger in the child. Usually it makes for an angry, bitter adult.

An Adlerian answer, and just as unreliable.
Self-evaluation does not depend entirely on the environment - there wouldn't have been inventors and discoverers, if humans would do only what others promote.
Appreciation may be important if coming from persons the human being considers valuable, whether it should be criticism or praise.
