What is the evolutionary advantage of purring for cats?

I just got a kitten with my girlfriend of six months, and putting aside the implicit family-building exercise of the act in itself, learning how to take care of a helpless little furry creature the size of my hand, etc, I wondered when I had little Fiametta (Italian for Little Flame) in one hand and massaging her with the other, what besides expression of pleasure is the evolutionary reason for the act of purring? Perhaps I answered my own question. Perhaps it's just cat-speak for "Me like this/you/etc." But being a dog person by training it intrigued me to think of it.
