A metaphor is when you say something is something else, e,g. The moon is a big ball of cheese. An allegory, however, is a story used to symbolise or explain the meaning of a philosophical or political issue, such as Plato's cave. Both are very good pieces of imagery to be used in poetry, but where as the metaphor would be used in the poem, an allegory would be used as the poem itself.
