In some schools and universities, it's already happening to some degree. I teach at a small school, and buying and replacing textbooks is an expensive proposition since we don't get a volume discount. At $100-150 per book, this adds up! And in my state, textbooks "expire" every 7-10 years and must be replaced. We've already had inservice sessions on how to use the iPad in the classroom, and the possibilities are endless. An iPad pre-loaded with all of a student's books would be amazing. No heavy book bags. No torn or missing pages. Students generally take care of their electronics. They like to toss textbooks around. I have been teaching for 28 years and remember using chalk and chalkboards. The idea of one device containing all a student needs--it's the wave of the future.
