If a bat and ball cost total of $1.10 and the bat costs $1 more than the ball, how much is the ball?

I saw this question on a show the other night and even though I consider myself math smart, I got it wrong: If a bat and ball cost $1.10 in total. And the bat is $1 more than the cost of the ball, How much is the cost of the ball? Apparently only 50% of Harvard and Princeton students tested got this right.
