Have you experienced thunder snow before?

Snow is typically a soft and quiet event.  When a thunderstorm strikes at the same time as a winter storm, however, it can produce a thunderstorm and snow at the same time, called thunder snow.  It is happening here right now!  Large hail, snow and lightning all together!

Yes.  It usually happens when it's snow very hard.  It indicates a snowstorm that has explosive lift in the atomosphere, which can put down a lot of snow very quickly.  We once had 5 inches per hour in a thunder snow.

Yes, it happens here in the Great Smoky Mountains area in Tennessee about once a year. It is a very strange and unnerving experience.

      Esmeowl12,
That is the perfect word for it...unnerving!  I was excited and a bit intimidated!  Sure made it hard to sleep, so I stayed up and wrote some hubs!  Thanks for answering!

Hey, Debbie! Looks like your a few hundred miles north of here, but we experienced the southern end of that same system you experienced this morning. Wasn't quite cold enough here to add snow to the mix, although there was a bit of sleet in with the hail and hard rain (but, then, what is hail if not hard rain, huh?).
To answer your question, yes, I have a couple of times in the past and came close again this morning.
