What are the differences in child rearing practices between lower middle class and upper middle
class parents?
Lower middle class parents are more authoritarian parents. They emphasize obedience as the most positive attribute in their children. They raise their children to be obedient as they will be mere employees in the future. They also stress that their children should aspire to be employees instead of professionals, even entrepreneurs. They believe that a certain amount of education is useful but too much education is a waste of time as no one in their immediate environment, family, relatives, nor friends are highly educated nor have high level jobs. They inculcate their children in the premise to aspire for realistic goals, not goals that are out of reach for their socioeconomic class. Furthermore, they are more punitive and harsh regarding disciplining their children. Lower middle class parents' behavior, attitude, consciousness, mindset & psychology are nearer to the lower classes than they are to the other middle classes.
Upper middle class parents imbue their children with the importance of education and culture. They teach their children the importance of the higher human needs such as self-actualization. They convey to their children the importance of attaining the highest possible level of education and the best possible, lucrative career of their interest and talent. Upper middle class parents also believe in cultivating and encouraging their children's individual talents and fortes. They believe that children thrive the most when they utilize their talents. They maintain that culture and other forms of intellectual stimulation are an integral part of the child's development. They raise their children to be independent and creative thinkers, stressing the importance of questioning and analyzing authority. They also believe in educational, corrective discipline.
