Why do students drop out?
Do you know any kids that have dropped out of college or university? Maybe you did yourself? I'd really like to know what are the main factors that lead to students dropping out.
The reasons I dropped out of highschool:
I hated school, it was boring, it was clicky, and I did not care.
My brother was on heroin, stealing my stuff, overral dangerous situation.
My mom had mentally checked out.
With my own children. That is why I homeschool them. I want them to love learning, I want them to not stress about all the other b.s. that goes on in school. I want them to follow their interests. They can get a diploma that way, and then go on to college if they want. I don't want them to feel pigeon holed.
It's an important question, not just for today but for better tomorrow.
I did my Diploma 1500Kms away from home in India itself. I successfully completed it with First Class and a Silver Medal. Later I decided to go for Bachelor of Engineering. I got admission at one of the Universities in Wales, UK. In my first test, with very small preparation, I scored 94 of 100 which were 3rd Highest in the class. However after a certain period of time, I found myself not being as much interested and excited to continue it. Probable reason being the change of Education type and Culture, which I was a little aware about before joining. [It was way to different than what I heard and researched actually before joining].
I want to admit here, that I was more interested in the way people of UK work and communicate. Which is polite and professional, even when they are being sarcastic or angry. I also loved the weather during my stay of about a year.
Sadly, it was costing too much and most of all it did not stand upto my expectation.Due to this I left and strangely don't feel like going back to any college or school!!!
Is the question limited to college or can it be high school?
My grandfather dropped out of high school around the 8th grade. I asked him why. He said that he didn't like to feel restrained indoors when his passions were farming outdoors.
He was a potato farmer in his teens, driving truck from CT to RI delivering potatoes to Providence. In addition, besides many jobs he held, he went on to manage a factory with 400 employees under him. He was earning 6 figures at retirement.
I have friends that dropped out of college because they had become involved in relationships, a change of mind about their major and the school didn't offer what they wanted to do, or pregnancy.
Kids drop out due to boredom, drugs, or their passion calls them to begin their life outside the classroom. I know quite a few 'drop-outs' who are living well, despite the stigma of being a drop-out. Most are business owners fulfilling their dreams. When asked about the specific challenges that were dealt, it seems that many obstacles simply prepared them for the success that has become theirs'.
As a teacher, I am excited about the choices in education that our young people have now. Just the other day, a former student came by to thank me and to say goodbye. I asked him where he was going. He said that he was going home! He had enrolled in some on-line courses last year through our local college, and thus received dual credits. He was going to ramp up his work, so that he could enroll 'face to face' next semester. (I wasn't surprised; he's a smart kid who when enrolled in my class was working beyond his peers. Together, we constructed an individual program.) He is a future doctor, who has decided not to wait-out the traditional classroom model. He is ready to move on and achieve his goals sooner rather than later. I say, Bravo!
I, myself, dropped out of school when I was a junior in high school. I did so mainly because I was bored and not being challenged enough academically. I also got into an argument with a fellow student and a teacher. A couple of years later, I regretted my decision and returned and got my GED! I am so glad that I did. I went on to college and got an associates degree!

Should high schoolers be able to choose core classes based on a choice of future career?Sophomores and upper classmen only though... they already have prep-classes that you can choose, but is that enough.
