I am a public school teacher so I support my public schools; however, there is a reason I support public schools rather than charter schools. Charter schools have a desire to run like corporations, but the business people funding them do not have an education background and do not understand the methodology or philosophy of teaching, nor the strategies that teachers use nowadays.
Charter schools also have less accountability than the public schools. In both settings, students are tested; however if a public school does not make AYP (adequate yearly progress), then it is open for scrutiny, teachers on probation or let go, and restructuring of staff and strategies. If a charter school does not make AYP, there is no accountability, so it can be a failing school with no consequences.
Charter schools do not have to hire highly qualified teachers and some don't even have to be certified teachers. That's not to say that there are no highly qualified teachers working in charter schools. There are some excellent teachers working in charter schools and there are some horrid teachers working in public schools, but in a public school, the teachers have to be highly qualified in their subject matters. The hope is that your child will be in a classroom with an excellent teacher.
I would send my child to public school, but I would also personally scrutinize that school, its teachers, its administration, its data and its reputation. have both taught and substitute taught and some schools raised red flags when I witnessed any of the above criteria.-- the teacher at the rural school who told me she put all the special education kids in a corner table together and ignored them because they "don't get it anyway so I don't waste my time." -the teacher at the urban high school who said to a class that "most of you won't succeed because you're poor and black or poor and Hispanic and studies have shown that you won't succeed." - the principal at the school who told me "gay kids wouldn't be bullied if they would just stop acting gay." No way would I send my child to ANY of those schools!!
