Do you believe that with the increasing global, social network that siblings will be a thing of the
past & totally unnecessary?
With the increase & advancements of global, especially social networks, children are not lonely, finding companions, peers, & forming friendships. Siblings really are not necessary in order for children to have companions. Companions & friendships can be found sans siblings. In fact, having siblings can make children be more clannish & insular, oftentimes not forming bonds w/children outside the family circle.
Gosh, I hope not.
My life would be so much less rich without the experiences I have shared my sister, and since we live close to my husband's brother we have an especially close bond with him and his family.
My dad was the middle of three close brothers, and growing up with a sister and four cousins was great. We are still good friends.
Siblings are not "necessary", as you say, but for those who have never had a brother or sister it may be hard to understand the bond. It becomes especially apparent when a family is grieving, or in another difficult situation.
Being an only child, and my daughter is an only child, there are times that we miss having someone to share things with when everyone else has gone home and we are alone. You make an important point about the grieving, too.
No, I don't think that's going to happen, GM. Evolution is about procreation and nothing is going to stop it from happening. However, I think religion has a lot to do with family size. Just look at Muslims and some sects of Christians. Religion will have more of an effect on family size than social media could.
Friends from social networking versus siblings. Both provide and satisfy same yet different needs within an individual. Siblings are a constant factor in our lives. We have shared history and the memories and experiences can never be replaces with friends via social networking.
Social networking friends are like passing ships that meet at certain points of our lives and drift away. Some of course sail along with us longer than others but as we grow and change different 'ships' will be met and together we will sail again.
Siblings are like the port - where we sail to and rest and recharge, being our true self, with all our imperfections and grouchy moods!
No! That is a bizarre assumption. Family is family, and friends are friends. Friends come and go, but siblings/family are forever, whether you like it not . Social networking is wonderful but its very overrated too. Friends you make online are nothing like friends or family in real life. There is a delusion and fakeness with social networking and digital friends/friendships. People can lie and hide their true selves easily online, and oftentimes people online often feel a pressure to compete and compare themselves to their friends (which may turn into result in jealousy and animosity between friends) .
Humans are social but they are also physical too. Social networks help a lot but I feel nothing beats physical friends/friendships. Social networks are all about expanding and making connections (but is often by superficial means).
Siblings is a unique and different kind of bond and experience. You can make companion-ships regardless if you have siblings. I would even argue siblings are your first friends and teach you how to socialize and make friends and bond with others.
