The ways are irrelevant in my opinion. What matters is that having a sensible number of children is more conducive to achieving balance in an advanced society. Without technology- particularly medical technology, it was necessary to have as many children as possible to offset high infant mortality rates and low life expectancies. This leads, of course, to wars, famines, and plagues to control population, as this planet does have a carrying capacity. On the flip side, if we want to keep this philosophical, this paradigm also promotes the idea of 'survival of the fittest.' As you, Grace, like to point out, over nurturing tends to lead to the weakest of a species prevailing which ultimately can lead to the demise of the species... Rather spectacularly.
