The Fukushima reactor was designed to take a magnitude 9 earthquake back then. What hit was magnitude 9 but they never counted on the massive tidal wave that did the damage!
Japan, like NZ is sat on a fantastic resource that may help. She is sat on a fault line!
In NZ we've gone the other way and we have geothermal power plants driven by the heat from the Earth's own core!
Okay, it is a massive nuclear reactor, but it's one we can't live without and it can help give us some idea what's going on inside the earth!
By the way if you think "that's alright for you in safe New Zealand" remember we get small earthquakes ever few days and where the geothermal power plants are there are five active volcanoes one of which was the most violent eruption the earth has ever known! By tapping that field we take the pressure off and make things safer. Maybe Japan should look to that instead?
