The position of oldest child in the family can be quite daunting. First, they were the center of their parents' universe until they are replaced/dethroned by succedent siblings. Oldest children are oftentimes discarded or cast aside by their parents knowingly or unknowingly in favor of younger siblings. Parents consider oldest children as protoadults instead of the children they are. Parents oftentimes forget that oldest children are just that......children.
Oldest children are expected to suck it up and toughen off. They are expected to mature quickly. After all, they are the example setter to their younger siblings. They are not allowed to do the childish things that other children normally do. Many times, they are surrogate parents to younger siblings. They have to assume onerous responsibilities, oftentimes at times when other children are enjoying normative childhoods.
Oldest children must be ON 24/7/365 for their parents and younger siblings. Their needs are not considered by their parents. Many times, oldest children place the needs of their parents and siblings before their own needs and desires. If they are not discarded or cast aside by their parents, they are placed in the service of their parents and younger siblings. They assume such responsibilities for which they are not valued nor appreciated. They are taken for granted; in fact, many parents feel that oldest children ought to assume the crux of the familial responsibilities.
