What is it about androgyny that is threatening to many people's idea of gender?
Because we humans, by nature, like to put people into nice, neat boxes. When we first see a person, we can tick off a box: male, or female. Androgyny leaves us with a question mark: Male? Female? That question makes some people uncomfortable. How do we respond to someone if we don't know their gender? Those who treat women one way, and men another, are left wondering how to act.
That a major portion of their self-image/identity which is gender, is more in their head than they'd like to think. Whenever you upset a notion about identity it comes with a harsh reaction to those who have not their house or life savings but their self invested in that notion.
Religion, nationality, race, gender, age, creed. These ordinary words on their own are big ominous headings for topics on social issues. Mess around with any on of them and the congregation of identity subscribers will take a dump on your pillow.

For context, the details aren't the point, the action is. That the student appears to be an activist is only important relative to what is claimed and reported to be his 'bullying' behavior: whether it was as innocent as the student claims or as strident as his background might indicate.It...
