Looking at history and comparing it with today, it seems like this might be the worst period. Sure there was the Great Depression and then WWII, but these were clean definable horrors of history. Today, the lines are blurred and we had our own economic meltdown, and we have been at war on and off since WWI. The wars today are not true country to country wars, we are being attacked by terrorists, and up until recently they didn't even have a country. ISIS and ISIL changed that, and now the Middle East is in flux as was Eastern Europe after the USSR went down.
The United States of America is more like the DisUnited States of America, or more like the Kingdom of America.
The Executive Orders of the president are more like the Proclamations of a King. The country is divided by the two political parties and their diametrically opposed goals. The racial division, and the wealth or poverty division. It is also divided on religion versus sexual preference.
If the US Constitution was a rock in 1776, then today it is pudding. Any powerful political group can scoop up the constitution and pour it into their bowl of constitution that conforms to what they want it to mean.
The SC hasn't made any real decisions since it was formed by congress, 5-4 decisions clearly don't solve problems and resolve issues. They just let them fester until the next attack in the SC. In the last 100 years, the SC has become too political and they favored the federal government increasing its size and scope. This is a zero sum power between the states and the federal gov. Now, as the federal gov grows, the states diminish.
The world today is in chaos, there are no clear lines to fix the problems. The US has become a paper Super Power.
