I agree. They all want to make star trek real which is not necessarily a bad thing. There's some hip hype seeping into hyper space.

Maybe scientists are trying to glamorise science or make it sexy or "hip". The nerd concept might be changing into an alpha male image perhaps.
Science fiction art of the 1950s and 1960s launched many engineering and scientific careers, as did optimism for the future. Whether a space race or scientists saving the world, that would spark many to enter those careers.
