I like the notion about generations that goes like this: His father's father was a trapper, but alas they trap no more. His father was a buggy whip maker but alas they no long make buggy whips. He was a fireman on a train but alas they do not have them anymore. His son delivered milk each morning but they no longer do that. But alas in 2016 his grandson was a doctor who made house calls.
Times change so quickly through generations that the only thing that is for sure is that if a family sticks to a way of life that becomes obsolete they do not thrive.
The family structure is not obsolete. I heard that a group of folks who could not get married fought very hard to have a right to marry. And yet something like a full half of inner city children of color grow up without a dad. And yet only about 250 years ago there was no danged thing as a license to marry at all. So my daughter who lives with her boyfriend without a marriage certificate is more like her great great grandparents than me who has one.
This is a great question this time of year. Family Holiday Traditions. Ornaments on a tree that my grandma passed to my mom who passed them to me who passed them to my son. Really!? Traditions made of things are actually quite strange.
Physical and mental abuse being passed from generation to generation is not a real phenom. Are we really going to buy into that new age victim status garbage that my dad beat me so I beat my son? This is one of my favs, "obesity runs in our family".
Hey by today's standards my mom beat me and physically and emotionally abused me. But guess what, her mom and dad did not lay a hand or harsh word upon her. If you are my age, chances are good that your mother and father drank and smoked during conception of you, during pregnancy of you and around your crib. Sorry guys I have no birth defects -- my craziness is self imposed so I can be creative.
Here is a fun one, my mom and dad obtained post graduate degrees. I am the only of 6 children to do so, and I am adopted.
I am conservative, my mom and children are liberal.
Now I reckon a jackass of a parent could really drill into their child to do as I do not as you learn.
Perhaps the gift of heritage is more subtle. "I do not use my brain so you must not also". I just looked up and tried to think of a great person whose parent was more great. You kind of think of the Roosevelts and Bush family but no. Just kidding here but JC?
Heritage is an excuse.
