I think it's the whole idea of Christianity being based on people being "redeemed" and "saved" from themselves. That means being a lifelong charity case. If you're not successful, it means it's not God's will. If you are, you obviously have been granted God's favor somehow, though like Job, it can be snatched away at any time for no reason whatsoever. If you claim credit for your hard work, you're being "prideful". Most of all, you are NEVER allowed to question this warped belief - especially since you never asked to be born in the first place.
