Yes. We are continuously urged NOT to dumb down the material, but rather to "scaffold" the material. However, because students with no skills are becoming the norm instead of the exception, we teachers have no choice but to water down content if we want to pass our students. You get side-eye from administrators when you fail all of your students.
Yes and it is orchestrated this way. Not all the teachers fault but rather an orchestration of systems with an outcome of having mostly unthinking worker bees. Abstract reasoning is no longer tolerated and as with the "no child left behind" program just pure garbage from the beginning. Competition/winners/losers is all good for growth in life unless you want to be a mushroom.
Uneducated people are easier to deal with than thinkers.
PS the dumb down principal began all the way back to the late 1800s ! Makes me think of the old lab experiment where you put a frog in cold water in a pan and turn on the fire low. He won't notice getting hot 'till he's cooked! People are a lot like that.

Do you think we can really close the achievement gap in our public schools? Our public school teachers are trying everyday in all kinds of ways to close the achievement gap. But, I wonder if as they are bringing the lower achieving students up, aren't they bringing the higher achieving kids up too?

With the state of public schools the way they are in the United States, do you feel that corporalpunishment should be reinstituted in our public schools to discipline bad, incorrigible students? Why? Why not?
