Hello. Please help.


I do not understand why the correct choice of the below sentence is..."idle" and not "idly" "Several ships are standing idle in the post as the dock strike continues." In a similar sentence I use adverb to describe a verb...for example:: "The students are standing quietly in the hallway." It's QUIETLY not QUIET. so what is the explanation for using IDLE instead of IDLY in the first sentence? thank you.
