Why do some kids choose to stick up for bad people and others want to protect the good?

Did some learn that honesty and integrity are most important in life? And the others were taught differently? Is it upbringing? Spoiled/anger? Or more an immaturity/maturity issue? Do they think they are gaining power which means control in a life but in a warped way? For instance, kids in gangs hurting and stealing vs kids that could never fathom hurting or stealing? Does that determine how they will be as an adult....
