The archeologist benefits from the orderly and methodical unearthing and documentation of each step. Logically this applies to police procedure as well. The difference is the time frame. If crimes aren't resolved in the initial investigation period (48 hrs?), then the chances of resolution decrease geometrically. Hence orderly procedure is augmented by intuitive leaps through the data as it is made available to the detective hopefully leading to breakthrough discoveries. The archeologist can do this as well, and has the luxury of time to to test the hypotheses that come from the intuitive leaps.
