April Showers

Updated on August 15, 2014

April Showers deserve to be celebrated

"April showers may bring May flowers" is a familiar English expression, but few people realize that it originated from a 16th century English farmer and poet, Thomas Tusser. April Showers refers to the spring rains and downpours experienced in some parts of the Northern Hemisphere. This is due to the position of the jet stream, the fast flowing air currents in the atmostphere, which moves Northward in early Spring, allowing large depressions to bring torrential rains and blusterry winds from the Atlantic. April showers can trigger changes to the landscape at a moment's notice from springtime sunshine to wintery sleet and snow.

This is a tribute to April Showers and the many surprises Mother Nature brings.

Celebrate the rain.

April 22 is April Showers Day even if it rains most of the month.

April Rain Song

"Let the rain kiss you.

Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.

Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.

The rain makes running pools in the gutter.

The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night

And I love the rain."

- Langston Hughes, 1902-1967

April Showers bring music to one's ears - Sit back, relax, and enjoy

Music written for Spring soothes and calms the nerves and transports the imagination to fields bursting with wildflowers, babbling brooks, the rush of rainwater, and thunderclaps.

The song 'April Showers" says it all. - A wonderful video for all to experience

"April Showers" was performed by Al Jolson in 1921 in the Broadway musical Bombo. It has become his well-known trademark and recorded by many artists like, Judy Garland, Mel Torme, and others.

This song by Al Jolson always welcomes April when it comes along.

Practical ways to collect rainwater - Raindrops turn into musical notes during a rainy day

Rain chains ('kusari doi' in Japanese) have been used for hundreds of years in Japan to collect water from the roof of homes and transporting the rain water into large barrels for household water usage. Japanese temples often incorporate ornate and large rain chains into their design.

The tulip rain chain looks great and works great. Listen to the tinkling of water trickling down the tulip cups during a downpour. It is music to one's ears and brightens the day.

For the Do-it-yourselfers

Make your own rain chain. Here's how.

The Rain

Pitter-patter, raindrops,

Falling from the sky;

Here is my umbrella

To keep me safe and dry!

When the rain is over,

And the sun begins to glow,

Little flowers start to bud,

And grow and grow and grow!

Entertainment at its best for the little ones

The colorful watercolor illustrations and easy storytelling style in "April Showers" of playful dancing silly frogs will keep pre-schoolers mesmerized. The little ones will join in the playful romp and leap, twirl, and fool around.

"The Umbrella" follows little Carlos in a lush Costa Rican rainforest where he climbed a tree so he can see wild animals better. Instead the wild animals piled on top of his banana umbrella until it was overcrowded and weighted down. Then a little hummingbird came and toppled the umbrella.

Raindrops are such funny things.

They haven't feet or haven't wings.

Yet they sail through the air,

With the greatest of ease,

And dance on the street,

Wherever they please.

It was a warm winter in MN, with very little snow, so April showers are vital to make up the shortfall!

The best thing about April showers is putting on flashy flowered wellies and playing in the mud puddles... and the first little green tips of the earliest crocus and snowdrops.

I love rain. April Showers is such an alluring name too. Where I live, most of our rain falls in Spring which isn't due until September but I love any rain. After 13 long years of drought I enjoy the sight of water fall from the sky.
