Chinese Art and Brush Painting-Getting Started Ideas

Updated on March 13, 2015

Chinese Brush Painting is An Easy Art Project for All Family Members

Chinese Brush Painting is an easy to learn skill that even young children can enjoy. Using simple art materials that you may even have most of on hand, you can create beautiful artwork that is worthy of framing.

We used a kit to get started but then you are only limited by your imagination. We have done paintings as gifts, invitations to parties, and great work for our art portfolios using Chinese brushes and watercolors.

The subject of Chinese brush paintings is always nature. Favorite subjects are flowers, trees, fish, birds, and landscapes. Using simple brush strokes, the painter created a piece of artwork that is calming and refreshing.

The Four Treasures (artist's materials):

1. Brush

2. Ink stick

3. Ink stone

4. Paper - traditionally rice paper

The Art Of China

These links will help your child find more information on ancient Chinese art. We are using these along with a study of Marco Polo. Then we used the Chinese Brush painting to follow-up the study of the art of Ancient China.

Chinese Brush Painting

We enjoyed a few days of Chinese brush painting using this book.

This kit has a book, paints, brushes, paper, and more for your family to use. There are enough materials for many paintings.

How To Paint a Tree

We enjoyed watching this video and then painting our own tree using chinese brushes and watercolors.

Painting Using the Kit Recommended Above

After one session of practice with the brush and paints, my fourteen year old son was able to follow the directions in the book to complete this painting. He really liked the results. I liked that it gave step by step instructions since this was a new art medium for our family.

I highly recommend getting the kit above.

Interesting, I have dabbled with chinese brushes in the past but stayed too close to traditional chinese styles I think. I should try again using watercolours and apply the technique to my own styles. Thanks for the lens and for some inspiring ideas

I've been doing a bit of Chinese calligraphy lately. Not exactly outstanding but good fun.
