Bigfoot Sightings

Updated on February 25, 2013

Bigfoot - My Neighbor?

There are reports of Bigfoot sightings in my neighborhood. I've always been intrigued by the idea of Bigfoot, but it wasn't until 2005 that I decided to learn more about them because they are said to live near my home.

I've never seen Bigfoot, but I live in a small town in the middle of a huge forest in Northern California, and there are people around here who say they've seen one. My town has businesses named after Bigfoot, statues of Bigfoot, and huge footprints painted on the sidewalks in front of a few businesses. Yet nobody here, until now, has put this information together, to try to prove or disprove the town's claim to fame.

The image is from the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film - the Bigfoot is called "Patty" by most Bigfoot researchers. See the film below. Roger Patterson passed away not long after he filmed this Bigfoot.

This page was made by Linda Jo Martin, blogger at Bigfoot Sightings and Friends of Sasquatch.

Bigfoot - Myth or Misunderstood Monster?

The Little Grider Creek Sighting

...less than a mile from where I live.

In 2002 a teenager was driving his pickup truck on Highway 96, next to a bridge crossing Little Grider Creek. There, a large, dark creature crossed the road, standing erect on two feet. The teenager saw it for only a moment in the glare of his truck's headlights - and then it was gone, lost in darkness. He did not want to talk to anyone about this, but word got around town anyhow. A few years later I talked to a young man about Bigfoot. It turned out to be a friend of the person who had that sighting. He said they returned to the site the next day and found footprints in the area. When asked if they were anything like a Bigfoot footprint cast we had present, he said one word: "Bigger."

Yellow Eyes

...less than a mile from Happy Camp.

In 2003 a woman saw a large, hairy creature near her yard. A forest fire burned nearby and she thought it could be a refugee from that conflagration. She left apples and other fruit for it. These disappeared while she wasn't watching - and she knew the creature took them. One day she turned to see the creature looking at her through her kitchen window. That window was almost ten feet off the ground. She got a good look at the hairy face, remembering that the eyes were yellow.

Sighting Near China Point

...five miles east of Happy Camp.

A forest service employee on the way to work one morning saw a large, upright dark creature cross Highway 96 in front of her car. It then climbed a steep hill next to the road. At work she told a co-worker who decided to go back to the area to see if she could find any sign of the animal. Looking at the top of the hill, she saw a dark creature looking down at her. After a moment, it turned and disappeared into the woods.

A Minister Saw It

...west of here, not far out of town.

In 2005 a tourist was driving through the Klamath River Valley when he thought he saw Bigfoot. He was still west of Happy Camp, driving toward our town, when he saw a large dark creature jump down onto the road from a hillside. It stood up and crossed the road in only two or three steps, then disappeared in the darkness. This was at about 10pm and everyone else in his car was sleeping. The man who had the sighting is the head minister for a large church in Southern California.

Huge Bigfoot Footprint

...found on the same hill I live on.

In 2005 a man visiting from Southern California found a Bigfoot footprint on the other side of the hill I live on. He was in town as a volunteer for Bigfoot research. A woman on that side of the hill claimed that she'd seen Bigfoot in her yard. He found the footprint uphill from her in an isolated location. The photo shows the large Happy Camp Bigfoot print next to a much smaller Bigfoot print found in another location.

Where Is Happy Camp?'s in the middle of the Klamath National Forest.

This photo is taken from the top of the Town Trail across the Klamath River and shows almost all of Happy Camp. See the river at the bottom of the picture?

Lots of people think Happy Camp is just a campground. That's not true. We have lots of things here - including a market, high school, elementary school, clinic, card lock gas station, two restaurants, three motels, and the headquarters of the Karuk Tribe.

Happy Camp is a very small town - about 1200 people - in the middle of the Klamath National Forest in Northern California. The Klamath River runs through our town. We're 20 miles south of the Oregon border and in the summertime there's a road that takes us to Cave Junction, Oregon, only 40 miles north of here. That road is closed all winter. Yreka is 80 miles east - it takes two hours to get there on the State of Jefferson Scenic Byway. Eureka is a three and one-half hour drive west of here. The Bigfoot Scenic Byway runs between Happy Camp and Willow Creek, where there's a Bigfoot museum.

Happy Camp employers include the school system, the US Forest Service, the Karuk Tribe, and a number of small businesses including the New 49'ers Gold Prospecting Club.

For more information about this town, see Happy Camp News.

The Bigfoot County movie trailer - ...not sure if I'll like this, but I haven't seen it yet.

I was interviewed along with JavaBob for this movie when the actors were in Happy Camp. At the time I didn't know that this was a HORROR movie !!! ...I thought it was just another documentary. Grrrrr.... so anyhow, these people came from Southern California to film this movie to frighten people away from Bigfoot searches.

Honestly, I'm of mixed feelings. Ever since David Paulides wrote his Missing 411 books, I've been thinking that maybe Bigfoot has been kidnapping and/or killing people. It is possible... and there are lots of people missing from wilderness areas and parks. So maybe it is good to warn people that Bigfoot could be dangerous, even though most sighting reports are of people who survived untouched just fine.

After seven years of my Bigfoot research project, I honestly believe that Bigfoot should be left alone. That's what they want, and that's what I want too.

Anyhow, here's the trailer with some nice Happy Camp scenes and some horror movie scenes from their fictional story... filmed in the forest near Happy Camp.

John Green's Bigfoot Book - ...just the facts!

John Green is a legend in the Bigfoot world. He was doing Bigfoot research in the Bluff Creek area long before Roger Patterson got there with his rented movie camera! Bluff Creek is about 50 miles west of Happy Camp.

Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us
Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us

This book takes you through the history of Bigfoot reporting from the perspective of an experienced newspaper reporter. John Green, wrote this in the 1970's and it is a CLASSIC that has withstood the test of time. If you really want to know about Bigfooting, this is a great place to start.

The Patterson Bigfoot Film

The Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot expedition took place at Bluff Creek - about fifty miles downriver from my home in Happy Camp. When I say 'downriver' I refer to the Klamath River, which I live beside.

A lot of people mistakenly think that a man on his deathbed said this was a hoax, but that's not the truth. Patterson, who filmed this, said on his deathbed that this is an authentic film of an unknown bipedal creature. Here's a link for an in-depth explanation of pros and cons regarding the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film.

Bigfoot Evidence

Here's a list of elements Bigfoot researchers look for in Bigfoot reports, or in the field.

  • Sightings.

  • Footprints.

  • Scent: pungent odor similar to skunk in intensity.

  • Their voices: loud screams and howls. Some Bigfoot reports indicate they talk to one another with guttural grunts, squeaks and clicks. Compare with sounds at Bigfoot Sounds.Com.

  • Rock throwing. Bears and cougars cannot throw rocks; Bigfoot can. This seems to be done to frighten people away rather than to harm them.

  • Broken tree branches, or broken-off tops of small trees around six or more feet above the ground.

  • Branch knocking: They are said to communicate by hitting trees with branches.

  • Rock sounds: They are said to hit rocks together.

  • Rock piles: They are said to leave boulders piled up, often near the ridges.

  • Beds: Piles of leaves/pine needles, etc. have been found and claims made that these indicate Bigfoot bedding, sometimes with animal remains nearby.

  • Shelters: Trees unnaturally bent into a dome shape could indicate a Bigfoot shelter.

Legend Meets Science

Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum is THE most renowned scientific mind researching the Bigfoot phenomena.

Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science

A priceless book. Don't leave home without it!

I haven't read the Bigfoot Film Controversy book yet, but I'm reading Christopher L. Murphy's more recent e-book, the Bigfoot Film Journal, which is a follow up. Murphy gives a detailed analysis of the Patterson Bigfoot film frame by frame, plus puts the creation of the film into historical context.

In his words from the foreward of The Bigfoot Film Journal:

"My supplement provides an overview of the filming story, twelve film-frame images, scientific reports on the film, and a section in which I address the allegation by Greg Long that Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin fabricated the film. . . . .

"In the course of events over many years, I have been of the opinion that we (the bigfoot community) need to put more on the table concerning the remarkable Patterson/Gimlin film. In other words, to move in closer and present and examine all of the circumstances and issues surrounding the film. In this way, we might be able to eliminate (or at least minimize) all of the criticism and skepticism that somehow evolves in the minds of journalists and others about the film.

"Here then, is everything I have gathered, neatly arranged and discussed, topic by topic." - Christopher L. Murphy

I can't find the Bigfoot Film Journal on Amazon but you can buy it from Hancock House Publishers as an e-book PDF or as an soft-cover print edition. This is expensive in print because there are lots of color pictures - almost every page is illustrated with photos, drawings or maps. It is quite attractive.

This book contains all of Roger Patterson's research, which was published years ago in 1966, in a book called Do Abominable Snowmen Really Exist. It also contains updates and other material by Christopher L. Murphy.

I have never seen a Bigfoot myself, and not sure what I would do if I did! I find it hard to discount it being real as there are just too many sightings and evidence. This article has a lot of great information!

      I. with a friend, was chased by bigfoot on the ogden canyon opening in Ogden. It was very frightening. also,up in south fork near there, a few years earlier, Bigfoot had screamed at me and my friends and threw rocks at us. I KNOW he is real, if I had not had these encounters, maybe I would not believe either, however ,,,trust me when I say,,he is out there, he is telepathic, and maybe he watches people build fires, like he did us, he watched us for a long time in south fork, maybe he wants to figure out how to cook his deer meat. I think Bigfoot hunts with rocks. A friend saw him once take a rock and hit a rabbit on the head to kill it. When he threw rocks at us,,we were frozen with fear. The rocks came down from a high level above us. It was in the middle of the night, way up in south fork, we were fourwheeling, there is no way anyone human was around us. we had driven for 30 minutes up in the mountains. When he chased me years later, on the side of the ogden canyon, we could hear his two feet on the rocks, and ground, it was so loud, him crashing thru the trees. We kept asking each other what it could be on two legs, then we started running and we ran for our lives.. It was big, fast, and loud. it was breaking trees as it came after us. clearly very clearly we heard the two feet running towards us, and on the rocks. It is real, and please be careful out there. I am not sure he is always friendly. He threw a rock directly over my head too, when he three rocks at us in south fork. he is scary.

It wasn't until I visited the U.S. (Colorado Rockies) that I saw just how vast your forested areas are, and how remote they can be. Too many sightings in too many areas for this to be a hoax. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us all. Angel dust sprinkled here...

@Shadrosky: I hope they exist. The alternative is that many hundreds of people have lied about seeing them... now wouldn't that be awful, to think that so many otherwise-normal people would be lying? So of course, I think the best of these people and am thinking they're probably seeing what they say they're seeing. Most of them, anyhow. There always have got a few demented liars trying to get attention with a sighting report.

Bigfoot exists in one way or another, even just in folklore, still a major influence on society! That being said, I can't wait till we find positive evidence.

Way to many sightings for them to not exist. But I'm thinking a primate we have yet to gathered data on.There was a giant ape that exist over thousands of yrs ago that was supposed to be over 10 feet tall. That could be the same ape that survived being wipe out some how.I've yet to get a picture or a video of 1 myself or even see 1.

Hi, i have seen 2 technically 3 sasquatchs, in feb 2003, in ireland, the male was walking and the female was hunched over , looked like she was pregnant, i was coming home after having ameal with my then girlfriend, we were chatting in the car on the way back, i took my eyes off the road for a second, when i looked back there was something in my way, i jammed on the brakes , heart was pounding i thought i was going to hit whatever it was.just stopped, i can still see its face, eyes were like horses eyes, covered in hair, my initial reaction was i thought it was someone dresssed up or whatever, but it was the way it reacted, just staring into the car, i remember trying to get out, but my girlfirend woundnt let me, to this day i wished we had a digital camera or something or had of gotten out of the car. we watched as they walked through a gap in the hedge into a field, it reminded me of harry and the hendersons but with darker hair.

I certainly believe there is overwhelming evidence for the existence. I think their numbers are probably declining, due to human development. I believe they are nocturnal, and their scenses are developed enough to avoid human contact in most cases. It will take an actual capture or death for mainstream science to accept it. I have digital art on my lens, via zazzle if you want to check it out. I hope they remain a healthy species, and are never really disturbed by man.

He lives downstairs in our house.

With a sixteen size shoe, he qualifies.

I've always wondered... I think it's almost impossible for an animal (or whaterver) to exist in today's world and not have been officially discovered. @callinsky lm: The mystery is a huge part of the attraction - that, and the fact that few Bigfoot sightings result in any kind of injury to humans. Apparently they identify us as smaller cousins and treat us with due respect.

@indigoj: Oh my goodness. Well, lots of people say they've seen them and I don't think they're all crazy or lying! I do believe there are sightings. I just wish Bigfoots could trust us enough to come out from behind the trees and say HI.. but of course, they don't, and with good reason. Human beings have shown themselves to be dangerous.

@anonymous: Hi Tooki! I haven't heard of any recent Bigfoot sightings in my area. People often refuse to talk about what they've seen. They probably don't want others to question their honesty. I believe Bigfoot bodies are probably concealed or even buried by other Bigfoots. I think it is very possible the government is aware of Bigfoots, but decided to keep this information from the public.I asked the local US forest service biologist if he believed they were out there - and he said no. And to answer your last question - I do hope that when I see one I'll be brave enough to strike up a conversation rather than run. Honestly, I have studied the stories and evidence so much, and am so curious about them, I don't think I'd ever pass up the chance to say "Hello" and see what happened next! It helps to know that they usually don't attack humans.

Bigfoot, another legend or... reality... As for me I very much prefer to leave the mystery intact, it's so interesting to keep questioning its existence and ending up knowing nothing more...

The Patterson-Gimlin film of Bigfoot that was made in 1967 is real. The North American Science Institute stated that the creature had both human and gorilla characteristics. Bigfoot is a human-primate hybrid. A man made creature that was created several thousand years ago by men that went to Africa and had sex with female gorillas. For all the skeptics out there, they were real men that had real sex with real female gorillas. And nobody was wearing a costume at the time.

Fascinating! Love all your examples of sightings and other evidence. And yes, if Bigfoot isn't likely to be violent I'm a bigfoot fan!

I love that you spent so much time in putting this lens about bigfoot together. It's very nice and well designed. I'd say a big foot could exist, why not. I like the experts speaking on the Patterson Film about the muscles etc. Great sight 5*.

Well, well, well... I like this lens (5*-rated)! I like good stories, true or not, and I like Bigfoot as an experiment of thought.... My scientific mind, though, produces the following view: The discovery of each and every new species ever was documented by at least one dead specimen that was presented to and available for scientists for analysis. ... Why has a dead Bigfoot not been found, ever, anywhere? They must die a natural death at some point.. and at least their bones should be somewhere...

If I was a Bigfoot researcher I'd search under beds and in closets of the area for Bigfoot costumes... If I had one I guess I'd enjoy putting it on from time to time to puzzle some people...

Simply because you haven't a bigfoot, doesn't mean they don't exist. How many people have seen a coelacanth, or a giant squid, outside a museum. I know I haven't. In a court of law, all it takes to convict some one is video and photos

Well hello ,,i have a take on bigfoot which i never talk about so here it goes...YOu may not believe this or you may but first when in the bible speaks of the angels came down and cohabited with the females of this planet which i do not think they were supposed to according to god but this was an unnatural union and out of this union have come the bigfoot throughout the ages this would explain why we have so much trouble finding one. They may be part spiritual as the native american have spoke of. So this is a missing link and who knows when they die maybe they just perish up in a puff of angelic spiritual smoke.. Think about it it does make sense...

I spent years hunting in Ohio..I've seen the markings of Bigfoot and thought they we're only hunters markers to mark an area where they might want to hunt again..I only found out here in the past couple years those are the markings of Bigfoot and what might be the territorial markings..I've seen broken branches, large impressions in tall grass, far too big to be a deer..and outlined in a human type shape..It's an erie feeling knowing how close i was or could have been to 1 after watching several documentarys of Bigfoot..I believe to the fullest it is 100% real!! There is no doubt in my mind at all..Thank you for putting this site up..I enjoy reading up on this subject and do quite often..

Really interesting lens! It has always been a dream of mine to go on the hunt for Bigfoot, sounds to me like your town is the place to start!

I think nearly everywhere in the world has a 'Bigfoot' style mystery, here in the UK we have the Loch Ness Monster, again, so many sightings, but no tangible evidence!

Hey there. I love your lens. I just created a lens on Bigfoot after hearing George Noory talk about the creature and another one called Dog Man. Have you heard of this one? It was very interesting. But, the thing that interested me the most was the theory of wormholes as being the reason why Bigfoot is so elusive.

We talked with a hard core hunter one time and asked him about Bigfoot. He waid well there wouldn't be a law against killing them if the government didn't feel they existed. When we asked if he ad seen any, his face turned white with a look of fear, and he couldn't really talk about it. He know more than he would say.

Hi Linda--I can't believe reading about Happy Camp, and Grider Ridge, where I once lived, and Big Foot Days, one of my favorite memories.

One time, 2 of my friends who worked for the Forest Service in Happy Camp swear they saw Big Foot--looked very spooked and also AWAKE, after the sighting!!

If Big Foot exists, Happy Camp would be the place to see it!!

Lots of UFO sitings there, as well!!

Hi, LInda Jo Martin! Glad to meet another novelist and writer. Over the years I have been writing at times as Taylor Jones the Hack Writer. You can just Google it. I have written often about Big Foot (fiction only) and I put up a lens. I noticed that your lens and mine are only differentiated by hyphens in my lens. I note first off in my lens that I'm not you, who some will be looking for, and I give them your lens URL. I would like to put your pic on my lens but I will not without our permission. I just want everyone to know that you and I are not the same person. I tried to follow you on Twitter but I guess I'm full up over there for now. You can twitter me at tjbooks. If I can use your pic, send an email at John

I believe!! Back in 1975 a friend and I were at her Great Aunts house in Texas. We were in a very secluded area Heavily wooded. Her Other Great aunt lived down the dirt road about 2 miles. So with nothing to do we would walk back and forth, talking. On one of the walks we could hear something just inside the tree line. The Trees lined each side of the road very thick so you really could see only about 10 foot in at the most. As we were walking we could hear something walking with us, we could hear twigs breaking and sometimes branches breaking. At one point we stopped and yelled out.. we thought it was one of our dads playing a trick on us.. But when we got back to where they were at the other house, they had been there the whole time skinning and dressing out a deer.

Several times on the walk we would stop and it would stop. When we would start walking it would too, it followed us almost a mile before we heard it stop.. We were only about a block from her other Aunts house.

Awesome post. There are too many sightings for it not to exist. By nature man is closed-minded, that's why so few really believe in all these encounters.
