Blank Books for Homeschoolers

Which kind of book would your homeschooler prefer, a coloring book or a blank book? Which kind of book is more educational? You might be surprised to learn that most children, when given the opportunity prefer a blank book to a coloring book. Not only do they prefer it but it turns out that a blank book is actually more educational than a coloring book.

You see, blank books invite children to use their imaginations. Blank books are open ended and invite children to create more, to continue on with the story, to add illustration and to express themselves in whatever way they are thinking and about whatever they are thinking about at the moment.

Blank books come in many different shapes and sizes. They have beautiful covers or very plain covers. Blank books can have lined paper, music paper, scientific log pages, graph paper or high quality art paper. Whatever style of blank book you and your child desire, you will find a blank book to meet your needs. Did you know that there are even blank books that can be written on underwater or in the dark?

Come choose your favorite kind of blank books...

Leather Journal - Blank Paged Leather Journal

There is nothing more elegant than a leather bound blank journal where you can write your deepest thoughts, the great American Novel or the newest Harry Potter like sensation. Just having such a finely bound book to write in can be highly inspiring.

As a homeschool parent, I found that offering my children beautiful leather bound books inspired them to write more often and to try their very best to create stories of interest to others.

Would your children appreciate a leather bound journal?

Blank Books for Practicing Penmanship - Handwriting Paper

In order to have good handwriting it is important to practice your penmanship. Having blank pages is ideal because your child can practice the strokes, letters and words that are most important to him or her. No need to continue on and on with boring words. Just practice the words your child chooses to write..

Blank books become motivation tools that encourage your children to practice good penmanship.

When children first learn how to write it is important to give them ruled paper with dotted lines to help them judge the height of various letters, give them space to for the taller letters as well a provide space for letters that go below the line.

Tiny Squares for Blank Math Books - Blank Books filled with Graph Paper

Writing about math in journals has an amazing way of helping children solidify the concepts that they are learning. Math journals can be beautifully illustrated. Providing journals of graph paper is ideal for math because the grids help with the precision often needed to explain mathematical concepts. It also makes creating Tic Tac Toe, Spores or other paper games quickly and easily.

Graph paper is ideal for helping to figure out all kinds of math problems. Here are some of our favorite blank books for math journals. Use them for working out problems, showing your work or just creating math games. Children love graph paper and blank graph paper books invite children to explore the world of mathematics in ways we never imaged as children.

Cambridge Quad Wirebound Notebook 70ct (06194)
Cambridge Quad Wirebound Notebook 70ct (06194)

This is one of the most popular pads of graph paper. The quarter inch squares are marked on both sides of the paper. The paper is an off-white thick bond that can be written on both sides without bleeding through. Use this notebook for science or math and use the grid to graph, make accurate scaled drawings or experiment with creating patterns in the squares. Each page is perforated to make tearing out a page easy.

Did you know that green tinted paper is supposed to be better for your eyes than white paper? This pad of green paper is blank on one side with graph paper on the other. The graph paper is divided into small squares with heavier lines delineating 5 by 5 squares. These pages would be helpful when children are learning to multiply and divide by fives.

Blank books or coloring books?

As a child I loved coloring books but I did not use them the way in which they were designed. I copied or traced the lines to make my own drawings. Coloring books made me feel that I was incapable of drawing my own pictures. When my children were young I gave them plenty of plain paper. They seemed to draw whatever they saw without the inhibitions I had felt. By giving my children plain paper they felt empowered to draw what they saw, not just color between the lines.

Do your children prefer blank books or coloring books?

Salamander Rain Nature Journal - How to Illustrate a Nature Journal

Then get out art supplies and begin illustrating your own nature journals.

Go beyond pencils and crayons and introduce your children to charcoal pencils. Often introducing new materials will open up a whole new perspective on learning. When my daughter was younger, she was introduced to charcoal drawing by a fellow homeschool mom. She loved the way she could made strong dark lines while using her finger to smudge the shading. How will your homeschooled children use their charcoal pads?

Music

Blank Books for Muscians - Blank books for recording music compositions

Standard Wirebound Manuscript Paper (Green Cover)
Standard Wirebound Manuscript Paper (Green Cover)

My children began learning to play musical instruments by experimenting with sounds. They also took lessons and learned to read notes. One day my son told me that he had been creating a new melody on the piano and was trying to write it down using a regular notepad. How delighted he was when I told him that we could buy a pad of manuscript paper. Now he has all those tunes written down. How will your homeschooler use his music paper?

Does your budding composer need a pocket sized notebook for keeping track of tunes? This Moleskine notebook is lined for music notation on one side and has blank sheets on the other.

We found that this notebook was great for writing songs. All of the verses could be written on the blank side while the musical notation could be written on the lined side.

I have several different kinds. I tend to stick with the hard-covered 8 inch x 6 inch size with the big spiral binding. The come lined and unlined. Although, I still like my sketch pads.

Penmanship and journaling are both skills that I wished I had developed more fully when I was a child. Penmanship is a dying art these digital days, I am glad to see you encouraging it's continued existence.

I once had a journal that was lined on the right and blank on the left. It was my favorite.
