Carbonium Ion theory

Updated on September 8, 2014

Carbonium Ion

Carbonihm ion is a carbon atom containing positively charge and highly reactive in nature.

Carbonium Ion and Free radical

The difference of carbonium ion from free radical is that free radical contains odd electron, on the other hand carbonium ion contains poditive charges. The carbonium ion is very reactive and a short span of life due to their reactivity

Ionization energy of carbonium ion

Ionization energy means releasing a charge happened for the required energy. The required energy to convert free radical into carbonium ion is ionization energy. The ionization energy in carbinium ion is relative in nature. Ionization energy of 1 degree methyl carbonium ion is less than the 2 degree methyl carbonium ion. This manner is also found similar in the dissociation energy of free radicals.
