Cool Dorm Stuff

Updated on November 22, 2014

Turn your "Plain Jane Room" into a Cool Dorm Room!

Dorm Rooms are pretty bland so you will want to spice things up with some Cool Dorm Stuff. This is your home away from home and you will want to make it a reflection of yourself. You will want to create space which is cozy and comfortable. Approximately two-thirds of your year will be spent right here in this room.

Dorm rooms are notoriously tiny and you will be sharing this space with a roommate or two. Finding creative ways to store you're stuff and keep it organized and out of sight is of the utmost importance. Under-bed storage is great for saving space and getting some of your clutter out of view for when friends come to visit!

It's a good idea to check with your College or University to find out the dos and don'ts of dorm room decorating, and what types of small appliances are allowed. Always check with your roommate and decide who is bringing what, so you do not have any duplicates.

Turning your drab space into something spectacular will not be nearly as difficult as Calculus. With just a little imagination and you will have the dorm of your dreams.

Cool Dorms

Rooms designed with some thought

A little bit of imagination goes a long way when it comes to decorating your dorm room.

You can find a lot of stuff right in your own home, just open your eyes and look around, you will be amazed at what you can find. Remember, college kids do not have deep pockets and your parents are cleaned out from paying for your tuition. You are going to need a lot of stuff for your room, so here are some tips to keep the costs down.

Posters are inexpensive and can add a great deal of interest to boring drab walls.

Find some cool throw pillows which blend with your comforter, These will add more texture and add comfort to your bed and seating in your room.

Focus on spending your money on the necessities you will need in your room.

The Wall is your canvas - So go ahead and express yourself...

However don't go crazy, black sharpies are a no-no. Minimize holes in the walls, your college will most likely charge you to fix these. Be careful of tape too, because when you go to remove it, most likely the top layer of drywall will be removed with it. Instead, you will want to use special poster adhesive, which will not cause any damage.

Your room should be a haven, a place for you and some friends to hang out and most importantly a place for you to study, sleep and makes you feel at home. Now its not all fun and games, you will need some necessities for dorm room as well. A mini fridge, task lighting, storage units, comforter, sheets, pillows, and so much more.

Dorm Bedding & Accesories

Comforters, Duvets, Quilts... Oh My

Choose the Color and Type you would Like

Finding a comforter for your dorm room is easy. There is so much to choose from. You can choose a comforter, bedspread, quilt or a down filled comforter which you would cover with a duvet. The size you will be looking for is most likely a Twin XL. I would recommend your comforter as the starting point for decorating your dorm room. You can then choose your accessories to compliment the colors of your bedding. One more note, check with your roommate to see what type of comforter they are using and the colors in it. You would not want to clash.

Owl Duvet Cover - Cute and Fun Comforter Cover

Fun and fuzzy pillows for dorms or bedrooms. Prop yourself up to read and get comfortable. Available in 3 colors with built in handle to make moving it around easy. Available in many colors.

Bed Risers and Mattress Pads

Bed Risers are a great addition to your dorm room. This will allow you to raise your bed up, in order to take advantage of the space below to store more of your stuff. Don't Forget a mattress pad. Your dorm bed will not be as comfortable as your home bed, but a mattress pad will help.

Mini Fridge & Appliances

MIni Fridge with separate Freezer Compartment (Great for Dorm Room) - Sunpentown Double Door Refrigerator

This little mini fridge with its separate freezer compartment is an excellent choice for a dorm room. I like this mini fridge because of the separate freezer compartment. This way you can store some frozen foods which you can simply pop right into your microwave to enjoy in your dorm room. A mini fridge is a must to keep some drinks and snacks close by. Otherwise you will be running to vending machines throughout the campus, to satisfy your midnight munchies.

Sunpentown RF-320S 3-1/5-Cubic-Foot Double-Door Refrigerator, Stainless
Sunpentown RF-320S 3-1/5-Cubic-Foot Double-Door Refrigerator, Stainless

Being able to properly store and refrigerate your frozen food is important. You will need somewhere to store your hot pockets.

This Mini Fridge features a compact double-door refrigerator with a 3-1/5-cubic-foot capacity. Separate freezer which is more energy efficient then the types with only one door. Convenient can dispensing unit, a wire pull out shelf and tall bottle storage in the door. The door are able to be reversed to guarantee the proper fit into your room. Dimensions (20-2/3 by 18-2/3 by 33-2/3 ) 1 year limited warranty

Footlockers & College Trunks

Trunks are Great for Storage - Available in many Colors and Options

Seward Trunk with wheels
Seward Trunk with wheels

Trunks may seem to be used less often then they used to. But they really serve quite a bit of value. The amount of room you have inside the trunk is huge and when you move into your dorm, this will help you get it there. The trunk can be locked to store money or valuables inside. Also the trunk sitting at the foot of a bed can now become a seat, just add a little cushion to the top and whallah!

College Trunks
College Trunks

Available in bright colors like orange, green, pink, and blue, the heavy gauge vinyl covering of our dorm trunk is sure to stand out and decorate your dorm room. The black hardware outlining, and durable wooden construction of this college organizer are both decorative and functional. Made with no sharp edges or flimsy material, our dorm footlocker is a college supply that you can use year after year. You can also use our dorm trunk to make moving into your dorm room easier by filling it with your other, smaller college supplies. Even if this dorm trunk is one of your larger dorm room accessories, it will end up saving you space and keeping your room neat because of all the storage it provides. So save space, add decoration, and keep your room clean with our must have dorm room footlocker.

You Can also try eBay - Find New, Used or Second Quality

Almost anything can be found on eBay these days, including college trunks. Why not try to find a used one and save some money. Also worth mentioning is the quality of an older one would most likely be far more superior to that of a newly manufactured one. Don't get hung up on color, because this can be changed to reflect your own taste quite easily. The things to look for are wheels or the ability to add them on, solid construction, you want to be able to sit on it without it caving in. A lock is great so you can store your valuables inside. If it contains a sliding shelf, than this is a plus.

Rolling Backpack

My daughter takes the train back and forth, when she finally finds it in her heart to come home and visit us. The last time she visited, I noticed she was hauling a 2 Totes, Laptop bag and a Purse. She seemed to be struggling with all her gear. Why someone needs so much to come home for one night is beyond me.

I decided she needed a rolling backpack style bag. One that could fit all stuff into and she could roll it behind her to navigate the streets of Philadelphia and hopping on and off of public transportation. So my search began.

Here's what I found for her: High Sierra Carry-On Wheeled Backpack w/ Removable Daypack

The back was perfect for all her stuff and something she could use for many years to come. The detachable small backpack is a great option as well. Tons of small pockets and the wheels are built to last. This bag will last for years.

Ultimate Laundry Bag

Go UP and DOWN Stair with ease

Rising Roller - Ultimate Wheeled Hamper

Let's face it doing laundry really stinks! But this rolling hamper is actually awesome. Roll it up and down the steps, side pockets to hold your detergent and is large enough to hold your dirty or clean folded clothes. Also can double as a weekend bag to hold all your clothes for a trip home, clean or dirty.

This is the ultimate laundry bag for college and one you should not be without. Trust me, You will thank me later.

I would say -you really have it going on here -in a good way.

Don't forget to pack the latest craze among those slaves to fashion and the health concious: e-cigs aka electric or electronic cigarettes. Your dorm mates won't object and your pillows won't get stinky.

My brother found turned me onto them. I told him I might like to try it. He referred me to this site:

Loved this lens! Decorating my dorm was one of the most memorable experiences of my college life. I've done some shabby chic decorating.... I loved the trunk idea for storage. That would be so vintage! Thanks a lot for sharing!
