Unleash Your Creative Thinking

Updated on November 30, 2014

Ideas To Spark Creative Thinking

Spark your creative thinking talent. Learn to mashup your thinking and step out of anaylsis paralysis. Many have the misconception that only a select few are able to unleash creative thinking in a steady flow. Creativity is very much like a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to consistently produce great results.

Children are naturally creative, and part of their charm is the lack of shyness as they sing, dance, draw or play pretend. Most of us become more inhibited as we mature and don't allow time and opportunity for creative thinking.

Yet even if those abilities will atrophy over time, they can be strengthened again. Practicing creative thinking is maybe not something you WORK at, but rather surrender yourself TO, make time FOR, or simply just ALLOW.

C'mon in and give your right brain a boost. let us help you allow your creative talents to bloom.

ALLOW for Creative Thinking

Turn down the noise and just BE to allow creative energy a place to grow and be nurtured.

Sound like work? Heck fact most people find that their most creative ideas appear when either on vacation or in a very relaxed state. Yet the problem for many of us is that we don't ALLOW that relaxed state very often, we stay to busy, to regimented with schedules, clocks and more to let creativity happen. Turn off the screens and the noise, listen to pleasant music and just doodle.

"Whenever an answer, a solution, or a creative idea is needed, stop thinking for a moment by focusing attention on your inner energy field. When you resume thinking, it will be fresh and creative."
~ Eckhart Tolle, Practicing the Power of Now

Creativity and Exploiting Chaos - Create Ideas for the Business World on Steroids!

Indeed the only thing we can be sure of is that CHANGES will occur, and often at light-speed. "Exploiting Chaos" delivers thought-provoking case studies of many who embraced changes by studying trends and capitalizing on them. Turn chaos into opportunity!

Popular book now available as a free PDF download.

Creativity is about much more than just drawing, painting or making music. It's also about using the tools you have in unexpected ways and finding unique solutions to perplexing problems. Keeping a journal is one way to harness your creativity. You are more creative than you think you are.

As Earl Nightingale says, "We have 50,000 ideas run through our minds daily. Ideas are like wet slippery fish. You got to get 'em when they show up or they will slip away never to be seen again."

Creativity Loves Solitude

Your creative self might prefer being alone. Allow that solitude.

So how do you unleash your creative thinking?

For one thing, creativity LOVES solitude. Provide yourself some quiet creative time regularly.

About creativity: "It can first fit into the cracks of your life, and as you nurture it, it will expand into a glorious interior garden." SARK

"True intelligence operates silently. Stillness is where creativity and solutions to problems are found." ~ Eckhart Tolle

Edward deBono on Creative Thinking

Edward deBono has written over 50 books on creative thinking and originated the term 'lateral thinking'.

Here's his take about creative thinking:

"Creative thinking is not a talent, it is a skill that can be learned. It empowers people by adding strength to their natural abilities which improves teamwork and productivity. It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns."

Did Houdini 'think outside the box'? No, he accepted the reality of his box, yet did not allow the fear of it to prevent him from working his magic from within. So it is with you, to accept whatever 'boxes' exist in your life, yet to strive toward creative problem solving in spite of your boxes, to go beyond them into a way of thinking that inspires you to think of solutions in spite of your box.

That is sometimes referred to as 'the Houdini Principal' => to rise above fears and limits to think beyond impending issues in order to find creative solutions.

Think Outside the Box

...or think 'in spite of your box'

Ever get tired of that 'think outside the box' expression? In real life - our 'boxes' are very real. Maybe you are married (that's a box) or have a job, mortgage and kids (all boxes).

The point is to make the best of whatever it is you HAVE, of whatever boxes your life includes.

"Every child is an artist.

The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

— Pablo Picasso
left brain right brain

Right Brain VS Left Brain and Creativity

Both sides of our brains need exercise. They work together everyday, and anyone can strengthen a way of thinking with regular practice.

Right brain dominant people are generally considered to be most creative. We have a natural tendency towards a particular way of thinking, still the two sides of our brain do work together in synergy in our everyday lives.

The right side of of the brain tends to focus on the visual, then process information in a simultaneous and intuitive way, looking first at the whole picture and then the details. The focus of the left brain is much more verbal and analytical, processing information in a more sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them together to get the whole.

Examples of a creative personalities might include:

  • George Washington, who often rode into battle naked
  • James Joyce, who wrote "Dubliners" with beetle juice due to an intense fear of ink
  • Albert Einstein, who thought his cat was a spy or arch nemesis sent by his rival.

The thing is, sanity or being normal confines people to think...well, normally.

Creativity is essentially breaking through barriers. Yes, this may include the bizarre and the downright strange.

Creative Thinking Can be Bizarre

Creative genius is often called insanity, so why be normal?

Embrace insanity. As John Russell once said,

"Sanity calms, but madness is more interesting."

Find a balance to ALLOW allow your creativity yet not get you detached from the real world completely.

Every creative thought was once deemed insanity by other "normal" people at one time or another. Luckily, that didn't stop the creative geniuses from standing by them.

The Creator created us as creators. Most people are afraid of their creativity, because it is a profound opening of the heart and mind. We do not do creativity. It does us. It is a deep surrender that adds art, healing, beauty, and bonding to the world. Creativity is one of life's gifts that makes us profusely happy.

— Chuck Spezzano, psychologist

Creativity Tools

Give yourself the gift of time everyday to let your creativity out to play.

Just like our muscles grow stronger with exercise, our creative talent needs exercise as well. So make it a habit to carve out time DAILY to allow focus on some kind of creative activity or playful designs.

Play with photographs or create a collage, get a blank book and play on a page in some way. Draw, color or doodle with crayons, markers, calligraphy pens...whatever you like. Even a few minutes daily of allowing yourself the time to just play with creativity in some way will make a difference over time.

Creativity with Doodles - Doodle your way to creative thinking.

Design Originals DO-5305 Oodles of Doodles Book, Oodles of Doodles
Design Originals DO-5305 Oodles of Doodles Book, Oodles of Doodles

You don't have to be Picasso or Monet to just PLAY with creativity. Take the stress out of feeling like you have to be an 'artist' by simply doodling.

Doodle Your Way to Creativity

Yes, even doodling is a creative activity. Ever heard of a mandala or a zentangle? They are simply artistic shapes that started out as a doodle.

Play with lettering and fun fonts or draw a design and then write some words inside the design.

Consider collecting a few idea books that stimulate creative thought such as this one, FUN!

MANDALA Creative Art - Coloring for creative thinking adults ~ Fun!

Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book (Volume 1)
Everyone's Mandala Coloring Book (Volume 1)

Can't draw? Then consider coloring some mandalas for fun creative play...and be sure to also consider coloring outside the lines or drawing shapes inside the lines or doodling within the mandala. There are NO rules, just another fun springboard to unleash your creativity.

"Creativity lives in paradox:

serious art is born from serious play."

— Julia Cameron

'Just BE Creative' Collage Art Print

"The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself."

I love the "Every child is an artist" quote by Picasso. I often tell people that the biggest inhibitor to creativity is fear of what others think of what you're doing. Eliminate this and just enjoy what you're doing and that's all that matters.

Excellent coverage of Creative Thinking! My problem is not lack of creativity but simply finding enough hours in which to follow through with all my great ideas. What will it be today--Squidoo, blogging, making collages of my grandchildren, creating new designs for Zazzle, making altered art images to share, make one of my favorite craft projects, go play with my grandson, uhhhh, well you get the picture. LOL

Love this lens. Have been here before and it is nice to have a creative boost now and then. As I squiddle around Squidoo today, I am coloring in a printed out mandala. It's not artistic or even creative, but the act of losing myself in this repetitive but colorful activity frees my mind to wander off to its own private playground. :-)

Creative like most skills has to be cultivated. It takes time and practice. Its been 6 years since I wrote my first piece of fiction. I didn't give up. Each story, each book was better than the last. My debut novel, My Mother's Shoes, will be released in September.

It doesn't matter if your creative expresses itself in the written word or on canvas. Keep at it. It will pay off in the end.

I think this is so true. Perhaps a lot of creativity is lost as we grow up - think of how a child can play for hours and imagine so many stories. I like the concept that creativity is a muscle that you have to exercise.
