Dinosaurs and the Bible

Updated on July 2, 2014

Did Man really walk with Dinosaurs?

According to the Bible, on the sixth day of creation, God created all the animals. This includes the dinosaurs since they were animals. On the sixth day, God also created man. Therefore, man and dinosaurs co-existed in the Garden of Eden. "Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind"; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." Genesis 1:24-26 Read on for more information on dinosaurs and the Bible!

But the Bible Doesn't Mention "Dinosaurs"

Here's Why:

How can the Bible speak of dinosaurs when the word "dinosaur" never appears in the Bible? The King James Version of the Bible was translated into English in the year 1611. However, the word "dinosaur" wasn't even invented until 1841. A famous British anatomist Sir Richard Owen coined the term "dinosaur" from Greek words meaning "terrible lizard" after viewing the bones of several dinosaurs.

The Behemoth was a Dinosaur!

Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; he eats grass like an ox. See now, his strength is in his hips, and his power is in his stomach muscles. He moves his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. His bones are like beams of bronze, his ribs like bars of iron. He is the first of the ways of God; only He who made him can bring near His sword (Job 40:15–19).

Wait, my Bible says Behemoth was a hippo

Read on to find out why it couldn't be a hippo!

Do you know of a hippo with a tail like a cedar? Or an elephant? Both these creatures have tiny, rope-like tails. Also, the phrase "first in the ways of God" suggests that this was the largest animal that God made. Does this hold true for the hippo or even the elephant? I believe not! No living creature can quite be described like the behemoth. However, the description very closely fits the brachiosauras, one of the largest dinosaurs.

Evidence of flying dinosaur still in existance today

Prehistoric looking flying "monsters" have terrified natives of Papua New Guinea for centuries. Now two daring explorers (Jim Blume and David Woetzel) have searched for these creatures and taken video of them. These creatures are called Ropen by the natives. These are interesting ideas and interpretations of scriptures. I mean in a good way, not anything negative. I like reconciling what I know to be true through science and religious faith.

My kids love dinosaurs and my four year old already has a basic understanding of evolution. Dinosaurs are a great introduction to science and we talk about how paleontologists know so much about dinosaurs even though they lived millions of years ago.

Dr.Robert Kennedy wrote a great booklet on this subject....of course the dinosaurs( or what ever their names used to be) existed, after all we have found the bones...and does it really matter is man was with them? maybe they were before Adam and Eve, as we really don't know the true time table of the seven days.

I can see why the confusion between the Bible's story and what science tells us. Science seems to point in the direction that man never walked the Earth with dinosaurs, but it would be an interesting dynamic between the two. Imagine walking up to a real T-Rex?
