Earth Science Presentation and Field Trip Ideas
This is the culminating project we did after a 6 part hands-on unit on Earth Science. We made edible volcanoes, performed earth science demonstrations, displayed paintings of the earth's layers and volcanoes, sang songs about the earth science, and more! The presentations were done immediately following the lesson on Erosion. Also included are the field trips we attended during this unit. My lessons are geared toward 3rd-4th grade level children and their siblings. These are lessons I created to do with a weekly homeschool co-op. We meet each week for 2 1/2 hours and have 12 children between the ages of 1-13. Use these fun lessons with your classroom, family, after school program, or co-op!

End-of-the-Unit Project Options
Please have each of your children complete one of the below activities to present/share:
1) Do an Earth Science project. There are lots of great projects we have not done. Try one out at home and then either demonstrate it for us at the co-op or simply tell us what you did and what you found out (in science fair project fashion). Here's one site you can start with if you need ideas.
2) Draw or paint an Earth Science-realted picture.
3) Write and illustrate an Earth Science-related book or poem.
4) Bake/make an Earth Science-related recipe. Here are some ideas: molten cake, rock candy, volcano potatoes, earthquake cake, earth layer meatballs, etc. Here's a website with additional ideas.
5) Research a particular catastrophic event (like the eruption of Mount Vesuvius) and either write report or a "newspaper article" on it OR make a speech to our group about it. You could even dress up like a news reporter or someone who lived through that event.
Earth Science Songs
The children sang the songs they learned during this unit. We recorded them singing.

Earth has 4 layers inside to out. (Hold up 4 fingers)

It's liquid iron and nickel all through.
A mantle of rock is layer 3. (Flex your biceps as you say 'rock.' Hold up 3 fingers when you sing "3.")
Crust forms the surface for land and sea.
Earth is a puzzle of 13 plates,
Slowly moving as they meet their mates. (Slowly wave back and forth.)
Some collide, some slide, some let lava through (For "collide" slap hands together, for "slide" slide hands back and forth, for "let lava through" wiggle your fingers)
As they float beneath both me and you. (Slowly wave back and forth as you point to yourself and to someone standing in front of you.)
Before Noah's flood the continents were one (Hold up 1 finger)
Due to sin their movement is never done (Sadly shake your head)
Seven continents slowly move around (Slowly sway and hold up 7 fingers)
On the hydronic plates that form the ground. (Point to the ground and jump as you say "ground.")

Field Trip Ideas
During our Earth Science Unit, we looked at rocks and gemstones at our Museum of Natural Science after we studied rocks (week 2). After we studied fossils (week 3), we took a field trip to a local phosphate mine and hunted for fossils after our lesson on fossils. They also told us about how they use core sampling.
