Searching for Old Barn Advertisement Signs

Updated on May 4, 2013

An Adventure into the Arizona High Country to Seek Old Advertising Barns

This past weekend I went on an adventure.

Out here in Arizona, there aren't many barns but if you travel up North, you see some and I have heard that some have advertising on them.

Join me in my journey to find some old advertising barns and see what I found.

Spoiler Alert - I didn't find any with advertising. However, I took some photos of old barns and have compiled several photos of what I was looking for.

I was satisfied to compile these and stare at them, even though I didn't see them in person.

I have thrown in a few "barn-related" sayings I remember hearing as a kid. If you remember any more, please let me know.

Please participate and have fun on this journey and leave some kind comments; Y'all hear?

Road Trip to Find the Barns

The White Mountains in Arizona are very similar to most high country locations across the United States. There aren't many trees with leaves but there are pine trees galore.

In the Winter, they can get a lot of snow up there. In previous journeys throughout the years, I have seen old farms and majestic barns so decided to venture out with my camera to find some.

As it goes with many things, you usually don't find something unless you are not looking for it. In this case, that was true, as was the opposite. I didn't find the old advertising barns because I was looking for them.

I didn't stop to ask, what man does? Instead I did find a few barns and snapped the photos below. None of these had advertisements on them but they were interesting barns, nonetheless.

I could've claimed the rest of the photos on this site as my own but at least I can claim that I found them. I am not the person who buys the store-made lasagna and calls it my own.

Please share your thoughts and I hope you have as much fun viewing these old barns as I did creating this site.

"The Old Barn Book" not only has photos and information on old barns, it tells you where to look for them.

Like me this past weekend, I drove around forever just trying to find a barn. This way, you can find them easily. This has some cool historical perspectives and photos.

Here is a really cool sterling silver barn charm for you or someone special in your life that can commemorate your barn trip. A great gift for that person who has everything.

Do you think old barn advertising should be considered art?

Absolutely, I love them and think they should be kept for historical purposes.

There are lots of these barns here in Ohio. A lot of them have artistic features other than advertising too, such as messages spelled out in the shingles on the roofs. I believe these old barns should definitely be preserved.

I remember the hay loft when I was growing up but the Hayloft Gang was long before I was born.

The National Barn Dance was a long running radio show in Chicago on WGN. Many remember it and I have known people who talked about it.

This is the story of the Hayloft Gang and it is quite an interesting story!

Great lens. I paint old advertisement art wooden signs and make them look primitive. Here in Burke County NC the Chamber of Commerce has Quilt Trail Maps for you to use for a scenic backwoods trip to see impressive painted quilt patterns on old barns. Unicoi County TN has the same thing, different barns of course. Perhaps I should do lens about them.

Enjoyed the cruise, and art. As kids, we watched for specific barns and signs while traveling to visit relatives...sadly, all of them are gone now. We also watched for burma shave signs which were always a treat.
