About Feng Shui - My Experiences
How To Feng Shui - The New Path To Progress
Feng Shui, they say, has the power to destroy poverty, restore health, improve relationships, and also to overcome obstacles to progress in one's life.
Here is a brief report on my involvement and participation in Feng Shui, the results accrued and my honest opinion of the concept.
However, this should not be construed as a Feng Shui guide or a Feng Shui course although some Feng Shui basics are explained here.
I got acquainted with Feng Shui for the very first time via a newspaper article way back in the year 1996. Prior to this I had never heard of Feng Shui.
Feng Shui was presented as a panacea for all shortcomings connected with the most important aspects of your life which you would agree are your health, wealth, and of course the quality of your relationships with people.
Two large Chinese characters, one representing wind, the other representing water were superimposed on the topmost part of a picture which showed Boy George performing. The picture appeared in the "lifestyles" section of a local newspaper.
The caption right on top referred to Boy George involving himself in Feng-Shui. The article contained a brief explanation of Feng Shui followed by the names of some famous figures who were reported to follow it's principles.
A brief outline of the lives of those famous figures were also mentioned, with reference to their health, wealth and how their realationships with their friends, acquaintences, fans, and wellwishers flourished as a result of actively participating in Feng Shui.
Feng Shui Basics
The very basics of Feng Shui involves the harnessing of a form of energy called "Chi." This energy needs to be utilised in order to enhance the quality of one's life. The system is all about the "how to" part of utilising this energy.
Conversely, there is also a form of energy called "Sha" which is considered detrimental to Feng Shui. Sha is emitted by sharp and pointed objects.
Health, wealth, and relationships ... If these three are kept in topping condition, your life would be perfect. Nothing in wanting. Who wouldn't want to lead a life of that nature? This totally new concept was out of this world, appeared so very exciting and easy to operate too!
When I had finished reading the article, I said to myself, "right ... this is exactly what I have been waiting for" ... "here is my free lunch ... my shortcut to progress!"
"Harrh! Harrh! Harrh!" I said to myself, delighted by this new discovery. Now, at last I can have exactly what I want, without having to think or plan or sweat for it.
I wasted no time in procuring books on Feng Shui and almost immediately started applying the principles contained within.
I was excited and anxious to learn how to Feng Shui ... or in other words how to get cracking on putting to work this newly discovered tool and to start harnessing its forces via application of its principles.
Let me now attempt to give you a very brief explanation of what I gathered after learning Feng Shui for a year and applying its principles over a period of eighteen months.
The Chinese People
The Chinese are a great nation of people, hard working and virtuous.
They have made great contributions to the well being of humanity in every possible field, be it science, art, architecture, literature, music ... and anything at all!
Anything of Chinese origin should be of immense value and should be considered as important and beneficial to all.
However, retaining a concept in its original form is just what maintains the value and worthiness of it.
The ways by means of which the originality of something Chinese could be determined are unknown.
Time enables interpolation resulting in partial or total distortion
Yet exploring and experimenting is an option that remains.
The System And The Application - A Feng Shui Guide
Feng Shui means wind and water. It is a set of beliefs which is supposed to provide solutions to shortcomings in prosperity, health, relationships, and career.
Feng Shui as previously stated is built around the belief in the existence of a kind of energy called "Chi."
According to Feng Shui, certain areas in one's residence or workplace represent certain aspects of the occupants' lives.
For instance the corner which is diagonally to the left of a room or office in relation to the entrance, is the area which represents wealth.
At the very beginning I guessed right when I figured out the best way to harness the power of Feng Shui was to enhance the flow of Chi to the required areas whilst blocking Sha to those particular areas. All the books confirmed this.
Enabling Chi to flow to such areas is identified as good Feng Shui.

Some Of My Feng Shui Books
The First Steps - In Need Of A Feng Shui Course
Feng shui masters use various methods to attract Chi to the required areas in order to infuse luck to whatever that particular area represents.
The most common of the recommended methods include installing bright lights, placing a fish tank, and placing devices which produce pleasant sounds, like wind chimes.
Valuable items like expensive ornaments also draw Chi by virtue of the nature of the value that they represent. Often recommended by some masters are Chinese pottery and items made out of precious metals.
Of course certain other rules have to be considered when selecting what to place where. On the other hand, Sha could be blocked using curtains or reflected using mirrors.
Since I had obtained a dozen books on the topic, my first task was to carefully go through each one of them and jot down the significant points, compare them with the opinion of the other authors in the same areas and then formulating an action plan.
Picking up points from all these books, and categorizing the the tasks and the sequence in which they had to be performed was not the least easy. It took me several months to come up with a balanced action plan.
I had to assume a mathematical method to do so. However, the rewards that were in store were far too attractive to let go. At least that's what I thought!
I started off by enhancing the wealth area in my office by placing a bright incandescent lamp on a stool right there.
This was followed up by placing speakers on a higher level and continuously playing Chinese instrumental music which contained sounds similar to what is generated by wind chimes.
Mind you, this was not a substitute for wind chimes, but I thought it fitting, as music was highly recommended by Feng Shui, and since I had in my collection some Chinese instrumental music which featured plenty of keyboard work on the xylophone.
The harmonious xylophone music was not in any way dissimmilar to the sounds emmited by wind chimes. However wind chimes were also incorporated later.
Good Feng Shui And Bad Feng Shui
Dilapidated buildings, and objects placed in an unorderly fashion also emit Sha energy. Sha energy does just the opposite of what Chi does. Bad Feng Shui is the inability to block Sha from circulating within your premises be it your abode or business place.
In addition, the arranging of furniture, the directions faced, the positions of the doors and windows, the colors of the walls all have some significance and involvement.
In short, application of good Feng Shui will cause the Chi energy to circulate in the vital areas of one's abode causing your health, wealth and relationships to improve, whereas bad Feng Shui will do just the opposite.
Going into detail is definitely beyond the scope of this article. However, you will get a general idea once to read through.
Learning Feng Shui Secrets And Taking Action
Some Feng Shui books recommended that paintings of Chinese characters denoting positive words like "fortune," "healthy," "money," etc be placed in certain locations within your abode.
I did not have difficulty in this area either as I was fortunate that I was quite familiar with Chinese characters as much as I am familiar with the language!
I did just about everything. I did install wind chimes too, in the prescribed areas. I re-arranged the furniture, paying attention to the directions that I was required to face.
There were recommendations on where to install the fax machine and the telephone, and on which part of the table important documents be placed.
The effect of the surrounding buildings also had to be taken care of. Pasting reflecting paper on the window panes to reject harmful Sha, painting the interior walls with colors typical of the requirements, like warding off the ill effects caused by some of the surrounding buildings ... well this is just a very brief description of all what I did!
Boy! was it not fun? I did this all by myself ... gradually ... over a period of over eighteen months.
Every single day resulted in executing even a small part of my Feng Shui action plan. Changes were made, re-arrangement of furniture, discarding old stuff, bringing in new stuff, walls re-painted ... Chinese characters painted on board, framed as prescribed, and placed or hung in the appropriate locations.
Well all this had to be done in the early hours of the morning and after office hours. However, I did carry out my plans, full of expectations and with a sense of renewed vigor every single day! I did these all by myself as I wanted the total responsibility for whatever gain that was in store for me.
The weeks passed, and so did the months, and I was getting closer and closer to my goal! I developed the habit of periodically checking back with the books if the changes that I already implemented were the right ones.
Since the opinions of the different authors varied, I had to use logic, and even mathemetical analysis to arrive at an "equillibrium point" which incorporated a balanced version of all the opinions of all the authors.
I remember that one of the most difficult things that I had to do was to figure out the exact center of gravity of the floor area of my office! This was a near impossible thing as my office, although somewhat four sided, was neither a perfect square nor a perfect rectangle!
I had to break it up into several triangles and join their centers of gravity and form another geometrical figure, break that up into more triangles ... OH GOD! That was some work indeed!
Feng Shui Business
Whilst being involved in Feng-Shui, I also learnt that in countries like Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, Feng-Shui is much sought after and is a requirement for any business as much as a bank account is!
Feng Shui is known to be a thriving business in these areas and Feng-Shui masters charge up to US$100.00 per square foot when assigned the task of doing a Feng-Shui assessment for a business.
I learnt later that being a Feng Shui expert and consultant is the most lucrative of all free lance jobs in these countries since you will be forever in demand!

Feng Shui Products
Feng Shui products are physical items ornamental in nature that are used to enhance and attract the flow of Chi to the required areas. Wind chimes are a typical Feng Shui enhancer.
There are various types of vases and ornaments too that are recommended by Feng Shui masters for specific tasks.
Reflecting, deflecting or neutralising Sha energy is also possible by utilising certain Feng Shui products. Apart from what are known as bagua mirrors, bamboo flutes are a commonly used deflector of Sha energy.
Feng Shui mirrors are more often mounted on octagonal frames as I guess the Chinese believe that the number eight is a fortunate number.
The word Chi is written as "Ki" by the Japanese, whereas the Chinese write it as "Qi" when English script is used for that purpose.
Chi has multiple functions. You encounter Chi not only in Feng Shui, but also in Martial Arts, and in a form of natural healing called Reiki, which originated in Japan.
The Conclusion - Am I Already A Feng Shui Expert?
Now I know what you are waiting for! You readers want to know the results ... right?
You want to know if my business boomed to unexpected heights, and if I won dozens and dozens of entrepreneur awards became prosperous beyond my wildest dreams ... right?
Well, you have a right to know. After all you have read up to this point, have you not?
Well, let me tell you. Over the period of eighteen months during which period I enthusiastically worked on this project, I believe I had done everything possible to draw in Chi and expel Sha. The basics have to be done right and this is exactly what I did. A lot of work was involved indeed.
Everything was done in stages and at the end of each stage reflecting on what had been done in terms of the instructions in the various books and then confirming that this was the best thing to do, paves the way for me go on to the next step and then onwards to the next and so on.
The six month period that is required for Feng Shui to take effect passed after I had done everything that needed be done and still there were no signs of any magical improvements.
The only improvements that were noticed was due to certain steps I had taken which was part of the business plan I had formulated long before. There were no improvements at all which could be attributed to the Feng Shui changes I had made.
Well, to be downright honest, what Feng Shui did for me was this ...
After eighteen months of hard work, and wasting time, all what Feng Shui taught for me was, it confirmed to me that ... there ain't no free lunch.
So ... what's my conclusion? ... Well, with all due respect to all who live and swear by Feng Shui, my conclusion is ... having learned it from the works of several authors ... for over a year ... and having practiced it for long ... having implemented the principles of Feng Shui for over eighteen months ... drum-roll please!
My conclusion is ...
Feng Shui is ... bull!

This may be so since all problems are caused by insufficient or unsatisfactory maintenance of health, wealth, or relationships.
So you get about the task of making your journey in exploring Feng Shui just to discover all by yourself whether this kind of a thing which incorporates a form of energy called Chi to enhance every important aspect in your life is possible or not.
You start with the basics like causing a few changes in your environment like moving your furniture around, adding curtains, deleting items from your abode or moving them to more appropriate locations.
You continue by re-doing the lighting system, moving plants around, working with ornaments, using vessels containing water to strengthen the forces which have been identified by the system as the fuel to cause favorable changes in your life.
You keep going with or without doubts in your mind. More often hope is the propellant. You, like everybody else want a better quality of life. So you make all valid attempts to achieve this.
Experimenting with Feng Shui will definitely give you all the answers to all the questions which are likely to have arisen when you read all the claims in your first introduction to this system.
A brief study of the subject is your first step and then you will move on to the next, the basics. In the basics you will get about the task of re-arranging.
Then assessing or figuring out the favorable areas in your abode or business place using the guide lines in your instructions book or CD or whatever else by means of which you have gained access to this system.
Actual implementation then follows. You begin to enhance the areas representing your wealth, health, relationships and so on. You continue in these lines hopefully, expecting improvements.
You also need to constantly check back with the instructions whether your application has been precise. The formula is simple. Learn, apply, wait for the result. For, it is the end result that matters most, right?
