   With Christianity, one thing that perplexes me is how many people believe the Bible literally - many of the mythical stories - virgin birth, and resurrection for example,  were not uncommon in other cultures in history. The books in the New Testament were not written when Jesus was alive.  It's not an original story, yet many peoples interpretations are very literal.  It is the same as any other mythology, a lot of lessons can be gleaned from it, but it isn't literal.
   
   I am also perplexed how people will pick and choose the parts they want to live by and those parts align with their own preconceived notions and prejudices. People hark on the anti-gay thing all the time. Yet, how many people follow all of the rules laid out in Leviticus? In the New Testament, Jesus never mentions homosexuality one time. This is just one example of ways religion interferes and tries to take us backwards in modern times.

      Insightful answer, Christin, people tend to believe what SUITS their modus operandi. It is also perplexing how so many people, including highly educated people,believe LITERALLY in the bible.The bible is meant as a metaphor,not to be taken literally.

      I too am perplexed when people take every single word in the bible as literal. whenever I bring up metaphors and hyperbole though, i get criticized by atheists. what do you mean by its not an original story? because of others like Horus and Romulus?

   Perplex is a generous definition of how some folks perceive religious faith...Because that is what it is, FAITH...Either you have faith or you have a cold, logical assumption that everything revolves around you and life is simply a circle of birth, life, and death...
   The assumption of perplexity denies the intelligence that is persuaded that a force exists that has created the wonder of nature...Challenge yourself...The Universe exists in all its myriad creations, the intricate formation of sea shells, snow flakes, the millions of spiral galaxies, the intimate complexity of human beings...Do you not stare in utter amazement at the world we live in ?
   Certainly, such thoughts are corrupted by human ego, desire, love, and hate...Each must find their belief system that supports their perception of life...Camus has said " This rock I can feel, therefor I know it exists, my heart is beating, therefor I know that I exist, there ends all knowledge, everything else is mere construction "....

      The statement " Some time ago I thought that attacks upon Evolution by some Christian groups ended in 1920s USA." is pretty clear: Christians attack, evolutionists question..Are you saying that the debate is over ? ..That it's settled law ?

   I admit that I believe in the theory of Evolution. Some time ago I thought that attacks upon Evolution by some Christian groups ended in 1920s USA. Apparently this is not the case.

      Why is it an " attack " when Christians question evolution theory, yet when an Evolutionist expresses contempt for Intelligent Design it's considered simply as commentary...
      Human ego is a common frailty.

      It isn't an attack when questions are asked. Everyone should ask questions about evolution. That is how science advances. Intelligent design was made up to attack evolution. Don't forget the 1920s monkey trial court case. No questioning there.
