This article is a must read and answers the above question scientifically so we can stop wondering if it is just coincidence or bad luck.

A brilliant piece of writing. Scientific principles explained with wit and examples.
Thank you for sharing John, and of course Rupert.

I read Rupert's article. The topics on which he writes are all over the map, which is why I always look forward to his posts. Many of them are quite entertaining, as is this one.

Rupert Taylor has written a very nice piece of information regarding the BSD phenomena and also the science behind it. Article is a bit amusing also.

Many thanks John for the plug, and the much-needed boost to my sagging self esteem.

I always heard the odds of the toast landing butter- or jelly-side down is directly porportinal to the cost of the flooring. Ha!

Opps! I misspelled "proportional". Too bad we can't edit our comments.

Maria I believe you are correct. I'm sure that a plywood floor attracts no buttered toast. But a silk carpet woven by unicorns is like a magnet for jam. jelly, and even mashed rutabaga.

This was a fun article to read.  Ah yes, Murphy's Law explains it all!  Haha!

Shauna - I recognize my choice of things to write about is somewhat eclectic, but if I wrote about the same or similar topics all the time I would very quickly become bored. I've always worked on the assumption that if I'm interested in something other people will be too. The only exceptions to that are rap and the movies of Leonardo DiCaprio.

I agree with you on the rap thing, Rupert. Never could get into it.
