So you have a Favorite quote, what is it and how has it helped you?
"No matter how bad life may seem, there is always death to look forward to."
Nietzsche: Beware of gazing too long into the abyss because, as you do, it also gazes into you.
I like yours. Who is it attributed to?
Another: Kurt Baier "Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living, but the over-examined life is nothing to write home about either."
This one is on my wall. And I think I need to study it more.
Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
There are many versions of this but it comes from Aesop's fable of the tree and the reed -
"The little reed, bending to the force of the wind, soon stood upright again when the storm had passed over."
It tells of how the reeds survive a storm.
"Before we criticise anyone, we must walk a mile in their shoes. That way, we will be a mile away when we criticise them and we will have their shoes."
"I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I have ended up where I need to be." Douglas Adams
I love this quote it is comforting to me. It reinforces that on our journey we are always where we need to be no matter what the circumstance, we are are work in progress each step leading to the next. For many of us we may have expected some other outcome for ourselves but here we are, and that is no less significant than whatever our expectation was.
Luke Skywalker: "I don't believe it."
Yoda: "That is why you will fail."
Thank you guys for making this topic awesome. Many of what you shared here are new to me and I think they are beautiful
To know even one life breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.
The quote is from a poem that is usually attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, although there is some controversy over that. It is actually a lot longer, but those words sort of sum it all up for me.
